View Full Version : A few suggestions (like...well look inside!)

Hello everybody. I am sort of new to this forum (along with others). I have some suggestions, and I hope I am not repeating any. Here they are:

1) Like on other forums, Katz forums could force people to register before seeing coded links

2) A "thanks" button for posts would be great because it gives more room to those who might have something important to say or a question to ask. I think this is especially important for popular posts.

3)In this section, wouldn't it be great to have a sticked post (or something like that) for all of the successful suggestions. There doesn't have to be every single successful one (because I know it might be a pain to find them), but maybe just a few and then start from there. That way, others would know what kind of things you admins accept and there would probably be more meaningful posts.

4)I have noticed that there are quite a few posters who have a specialty. Couldn't Katz forums have some section somewhere where those who are experts in areas create threads (like "Photoshop" or "computer building")? Maybe you admins could choose who starts a thread there. It doesn't have to be big (if you're selectively choosing people), but over time it can grow. This would help quite a few people. Picture person A, who asks a question on photoshop in the help section. The expert, person B, doesn't see the post because he's been gone for a while and during that time, others have posted, bumping the question down. Even if it goes back up when someone answers, it's still harder for person B to see it. But if person B had a photoshop section, the question would be answered as soon as possible.

Just a few suggestions from a beginner,

Andrey

if you want a thanks button go to www.xphilez.com
and experience the trouble with it.
Katz is the best forum and it should be that way.
we have the best moderators like JGM.
so if you have any suggestions become a moderator yourself.

Just reply Thanks and all problems are eliminated

Ok, I can see how 2 you feel about the thanks issue. But what about the other issues? BTW:

@ Tarssister: how can the problem be eliminated by replying with a thanks if the problem starts when someone replies thanks (at least that's what you were supposed to get out of my first post)?
@ kylian: why did you say that I should become a moderator to post suggestions? What about everyone else? I just don't think that's really fair. But that's just my input into this.

Thanks,

Andrey

4th one would be good, some1 suggested that already (guess no admins saw it)

the 1st 1...
can unregistered members even see the DL's thread?
if so, then that would be good to get rid of leechers

the thanks button was knocked on the head a while back, as for number 4 it comes back to how many sub-forums you would have to sort this one there are a lot of speciality topics out there how many do you want to cover, I think this would be a no also, don't get me wrong some good ideas just don't think it will happen

Hey what's wrong saying thanks, it is a matter of appreciating a job well done.

Tarsisster, what do you mean by someone messing with their thanks button? If you look at tehparadox forums, they have a thanks button and whoever clicks on it gets their user name put right below the post they thanked. It's pretty evident. Google that forum and find out for yourself. I don't think anyone could mess with that ;) .

@tisha: I understand that. Yet with a thanks button you are doing the exact same thing but in the button case, that thing is the same for everyone. Instead of "thanks m8" "gr8 job man, thanks!", It's just a thanks button- a standard for everyone, making all the statements essentially transform into "Thanks". This makes it easier for people to reply with a thanks (because believe me, I know how "difficult" some people think it is). And with more thanks, it seems to me that the poster would be happier :) . Moreover, for really popular threads with many progs, it's easier to know what they are being thanked for (some people may find it useful, some not- or maybe most, who knows). And I repeat, this gives more room for those who need help or want to say something about the post. If people just take up space with their thanks, those with need of help may be overlooked. And if you want to see how it could possibly work, go to tehparadox and if you want, you can ask them why they have a thanks button.

@ all: I've noticed that suggestion 4 is liked somewhat. So isn't it possible to just script some code and try it out for at least a month. I'm pretty sure the admins could either find someone to take it on or themselves. You never know, it could turn out to be big hit.
@Gismo: I know and understand that implementation could cause confusion. But you could keep the specialized sections limited for a test run for a month and give the section owners the ability to delete random posts, which I don't think should be much of a problem, so you wouldn't even need to probably do that. But risk is how you get ahead and with the ability to change material quickly, I don't see what the problems could be. But that's just me and maybe I am just not getting it :) .

Thanks for your reply's,

Andrey

its great to have suggestions and putting them out there for all to read and see what reactions you get, but no matter what we say in replies its still going to be up to the admins if they read this thread and decide if its a good thing or not, as gmods and mods we can only say what we feel if we like the idea or not just like all members have that same right, but we can't put this in place that falls onto the admins and they have the final say and that goes for any other ideas put forward by all members. So I can only suggest that you wait and see if the admins of site read and reply to this ok

I don't know why you posted that link tarssister unless you got the idea that by specialized posts I meant specialized computer posts. But I meant specialized posts in general. Besides that, I don't know what else to add.

-Andrey

PS @ gismo: I just read your reply. I guess I'll just wait and see

Hey -
Thanks for the suggestions. Most of which have been suggested before. While i do understand where you are coming from about the 'thanks' button, and how your topic/reply can get lost in the shuffle - We all know that most people just don't use a thank you button when it is installed.

We'll always keep out forum open to guests. Katz.cd is open and free to use for everyone, and we want to keep the forums that way too. Katzforums is an extension of what we already offer.

Lastly, our moderators have the ability to "sticky" topics.. if you want to have your topic stickied, simply send them a private message so they can sticky something if they feel its worth a sticky.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Leechers will always exist they simply join up and never post get what they want and never return.

A lot of user groups were removed to keep the forum simple so it wont be implemented

this is a strange idea, but what if you could code it so the thanks button in such sends a private message to the thanks folder in the users Inbox. i.e. i write thanks in the quick reply box and then click on thanx which will send it directly to the posters inbox in the thanks folder.

i agree with jgm, there will always be leechers. but a hidden content of the post links could also serve useful. though it wont keep leechers out fully it would omit alot of them.

You will find this on every forum a person comes looks around gets what they want then they leave. They might return but just to leech again then be gone it is like this all over the net. Yes for most that work hard it is nto good but what can you do they are out there for sure.

i love the forum as is (only thing i wish is that i could post forum pages to katz.cd) as with a lot of sites im turned away that they want membership before you get anything, keep it unrestricted i say, if leechers like and feel like it then they'll join and maybe post, but restricting viewing links is just lowering the quality of the site.

As for thanks then it would be nice, but if it aint working 100% then i dont want it.
