Book about gears
The Boston Gear Story
Established in Charlestown, Massachusetts Boston Gear was
founded by none other than the man who invented the
calculator - George Grant. Grant headed the business from
1877 to 1891, when it was sold to Frank Burgess, a
businessman with one overriding goal: to provide accuracy,
economy, and despatch, or, in today’s marketing vernacular,
quality, price, and service - and indeed, those are the
hallmarks upon which Boston Gear was built.
Since then, the Boston Gear story has been measured in one
milestone after another, including:

Applied Charged Particle Optics
This booklet is essentially an extended English version of a course I
taught at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching/
Munich for physicists and graduate students working at the Institute
and for the nearby Physics Department of the Technical University.
It covers mostly applications of particle optics which I have designed,
built and worked with myself during my career, such as mass spectrom-
etry, focusing of ion beams, emission microscopy, ion and electron beam
systems, in an energy range of less than 20 keV.
It is intended to help physicists who have to design their own appa-
ratus or to help them to better understand instruments they have to
work with.

Rolling Bearing Analysis
FIFTH EDITION
Essential Concepts
of Bearing Technology

Preface
Ball and roller bearings, together called rolling bearings, are commonly used machine elem-
ents. They are used to permit motion of, or about, shafts in simple commercial devices such as
bicycles, roller skates, and electric motors. They are also used in complex mechanisms such
as aircraft gas turbines, rolling mills, dental drills, gyroscopes, and power transmissions. Until
around 1940, the design and application of these bearings involved more art than science.
Since 1945, marking the end of World War II and the beginning of the atomic age, scientific
progress has occurred at an exponential pace. Since 1958, the date that marks the commence-
ment of space travel, continually increasing demands have been made of engineering equip-
ment. To ascertain the effectiveness of rolling bearings in modern engineering applications, a
firm understanding of how these bearings perform under varied and often extremely demand-
ing conditions of operation is necessary.

Preface
In the past few decades, the Finite Element Method (FEM) has been developed into a key
indispensable technology in the modelling and simulation of various engineering systems.
In the development of an advanced engineering system, engineers have to go through a very
rigorous process of modelling, simulation, visualization, analysis, designing, prototyping,
testing, and finally, fabrication/construction. As such, techniques related to modelling and
simulation in a rapid and effective way play an increasingly important role in building
advanced engineering systems, and therefore the application of the FEM has multiplied
rapidly.

Preface
Congratulations and thank you for reading this book! You hold in your hand
perhaps the first book solely written on mechanical reverse engineering from an
industry perspective. The motivation for this book originates from the needs of
today’s global industry.
We recall an incident during one of our industrial trips to a local manufactur-
ing company. The office secretary was photocopying documents for this meet-
ing, when the manufacturing manager remarked, “Wouldn’t it be nice if I could
do the same with mechanical parts, it would save me and my team a lot of time
and money.” “Have you not heard of reverse engineering?” we asked him. “Re-
verse engineering, isn’t that something to do with programming computers?”
“No,” we replied. “Reverse engineering (RE) refers to creating a computer-aided
design (CAD) model from an existing physical object, which can be used as
a design tool for producing a copy of an object, extracting the design concept of
an existing model, or re engineering an existing part.” His eyes lit up. Such situa-
tions are not uncommon in today’s manufacturing arena.

Preface
The purpose of this handbook is to present the reader with a teachable text
that includes theory and examples. Useful analytical techniques provide the
student and the practitioner with powerful tools for mechanical design. This
book may also serve as a reference for the designer and as a source book for
the researcher.
This handbook is comprehensive, convenient, detailed, and is a guide
for the mechanical engineer. It covers a broad spectrum of critical engineer-
ing topics and helps the reader understand the fundamentals.
This handbook contains the fundamental laws and theories of science
basic to mechanical engineering including controls and mathematics. It
provides readers with a basic understanding of the subject, together with
suggestions for more specific literature. The general approach of this book
involves the presentation of a systematic explanation of the basic concepts of
mechanical systems.
This handbook’s special features include authoritative contributions,
chapters on mechanical design, useful formulas, charts, tables, and illustra-
tions. With this handbook the reader can study and compare the available

Mechanical Engineer’s
Data Handbook
J. Carvill
Preface
There are several good mechanical engineering data books on the market but these tend to be very bulky and
expensive, and are usually only available in libraries as reference books.
The Mechanical Engineer’s Data Handbook has been compiled with the express intention of providing a
compact but comprehensive source of information of particular value to the engineer whether in the design office,
drawing office, research and development department or on site. It should also prove to be of use to production,
chemical, mining, mineral, electrical and building services engineers, and lecturers and students in universities,
polytechnics and colleges. Although intended as a personal handbook it should also find its way into the libraries
of engineering establishments and teaching institutions.
The Mechanical Engineer’s Data Handbook covers the main disciplines of mechanical engineering and
incorporates basic principles, formula for easy substitution, tables of physical properties and much descriptive
matter backed by numerous illustrations. It also contains a comprehensive glossary of technical terms and a full
index for easy cross-reference.
1 would like to thank my colleagues at the University of Northumbria, at Newcastle, for their constructive
suggestions and useful criticisms, and my wife Anne for her assistance and patience in helping me to prepare this
book.

Preface
The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Engineering provides a compendium of more than
18,000 terms that are central to the various branches of engineering and related
fields of science. The coverage in this Second Edition is focused on building
construction, chemical engineering, civil engineering, control systems, design
engineering, electricity and electronics, engineering acoustics, industrial engi-
neering, mechanics and mechanical engineering, systems engineering, and
thermodynamics. Many new entries have been added since the previous edition
with others revised as necessary. Many of the terms used in engineering are
often found in specialized dictionaries and glossaries; this Dictionary, however,
aims to provide the user with the convenience of a single, comprehensive
reference.

Marks’
Standard Handbook for
Mechanical Engineers
Preface to the Tenth Edition
In the preparation of the tenth edition of ‘‘Marks,’’ the Editors had two major continuing
objectives. First, to modernize and update the contents as required, and second, to hold to the
high standard maintained for eighty years by the previous Editors, Lionel S. Marks and
Theodore Baumeister.
The Editors have found it instructive to leaf through the first edition of Marks’ Handbook
and to peruse its contents. Some topics still have currency as we approach the end of the
twentieth century; others are of historical interest only. Certainly, the passage of 80 years since
the publication of the first edition sends a clear message that ‘‘things change’’!
The replacement of the U.S. Customary System (USCS) of units by the International Sys-
tem (SI) is still far from complete, and proceeds at different rates not only in the engineering
professions, but also in our society in general. Accordingly, duality of units has been retained,
as appropriate.
Established practice combined with new concepts and developments are the underpinnings
of our profession. Among the most significant and far-reaching changes are the incorporation
of microprocessors into many tools and devices, both new and old. An ever-increasing number
of production processes are being automated with robots performing dull or dangerous jobs.
Workstations consisting of personal computers and a selection of software seemingly with-
out limits are almost universal. Not only does the engineer have powerful computational and
analytical tools at hand, but also those same tools have been applied in diverse areas which
appear to have no bounds. A modern business or manufacturing entity without a keyboard and
a screen is an anomaly.
The Editors are cognizant of the competing requirements to offer the user a broad spectrum
of information that has been the hallmark of the Marks’ Handbook since its inception, and yet
to keep the size of the one volume within reason. This has been achieved through the diligent
efforts and cooperation of contributors, reviewers, and the publisher.
Last, the Handbook is ultimately the responsibility of the Editors. Meticulous care has been
exercised to avoid errors, but if any are inadvertently included, the Editors will appreciate
being so informed so that corrections can be incorporated in subsequent printings of this
edition.

Longman
English
Grammar
L G.Alexander
Introduction
Aims and level
Grammatical descriptions of English which are addressed to learners
are often oversimplified and inaccurate This is the inevitable result of
lack of time in the classroom and lack of space in course books and
practice books Badly expressed and inaccurate rules, in turn, become
enshrined in grammar books directed at teachers and students The
misrepresentation of English grammar gives a false view of the
language, perpetuates inaccurate 'rules', and results in errors in
communication It is against this background that the Longman English
Grammar has been written
The primary aim of this book is to present a manageable coverage of
grammar at intermediate and advanced levels, which will serve two
purposes
1 To present information which can be consulted for reference
2 To suggest the range of structures that a student would need to be
familiar with receptively and (to a lesser extent) productively to be
able to communicate effectively
In other words, the book aims to be a true pedagogical grammar for
everyone concerned with English as a foreign language It attempts to
provide reasonable answers to reasonable questions about the
workings of the language and to define what English as a Foreign
Language is in terms of grammar

PROPERTIES AND SELECTION OF
ORGANIC SOLVENTS
INTRODUCTION AND AN OVERVIEW OF PART 1
The term solvent refers to a substance in which another substance is dissolved
forming a solution. Solvents are used to suspend or change the physical properties
of a material.
Most organic liquids can act as a solvent. Solvents represent an important
component in the chemical industry processes and in the application industries that
employ solvents as ingredients in the manufacture of various products. Many
organic solvents also serve as chemical intermediates in the synthesis of other
organic chemicals.

1.1 Introduction
Since the mid-nineties, the computing industry has been using object-oriented
middleware platforms, such as DCOM [3] and CORBA [4]. Object-oriented
middleware was an important step forward toward making distributed computing
available to application developers. For the first time, it was possible to build
distributed applications without having to be a networking guru: the middleware
platform took care of the majority of networking chores, such as marshaling and
unmarshaling (encoding and decoding data for transmission), mapping logical
object addresses to physical transport endpoints, changing the representation of
data according to the native machine architecture of client and server, and auto-
matically starting servers on demand.

Electrical Guide to
Utility Scale Wind Turbines
I Introduction
Wind energy and large wind turbines are becoming a generally accepted utility scale power
generating technology. As of the end of 2003, about 6000 MW of wind powered generation was
operating in the North America.
This document was created to provide guidance and technical information relative to the design,
interconnection, and operation of utility scale wind energy projects.
The equipment and technology available for utility scale wind projects has certain unique
characteristics that should be considered in order to construct and operate a reliable project
consistent with good utility practice.
This information is intended to supplement interconnection standards and policies established by
the local interconnection Utility, The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), and the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
This document provides information and special considerations for the design, interconnection,
and operation of utility scale wind powered generation stations. Utility scale wind projects
typically are comprised of a large number of wind turbines rated 0.6 megawatts to several
megawatts for each unit. Projects include a medium voltage power collection system that ties all
turbines together and delivers the project output to a central step-up substation for delivery to the
utility system. The point of delivery with the utility system is often at transmission voltages of 69
kV or higher.
This information is intended to be used as a guide for the wind turbine manufacturer, project
developer, and utility engineer in the design and interconnection of wind powered generating
stations.

The understanding of gestures is very difficult when the various elements are separated from their context. However, when gestures are fitted together into their composite positions, a complete picture evolves.
Each gesture is like a word in a language. In order to be understood in a language, one must structure his words into units, or "sentences," that express complete thoughts. It is not unusual for attendees at our seminars to attempt to bridge this word/sentence gap quickly. Some sincerely believe that a cursory exposure to the world of nonverbal communication equips them to speak the "language" fluently. On the contrary, this serves only to bring their awareness to a conscious level, not to make them experts. We attempt to discourage individuals from jumping to immediate conclusions based on the observation and comprehension of isolated gestures. Understanding the congruence of gestures in harmony with one another is far more important. A static gesture lasting several seconds might be contradicted by a prior body movement (incongruence), which in turn might be further repudiated by a subsequent gesture.
