I'm curious about the free RS gens.

Hi all, I've been surfing around and I've noticed a few things. One is that the folks here are pretty sharp and I've gotten and read some great advice.
One thing I'm really curious about is why these free RS link generators seem to pop up along with forums like this, although smaller.
Clearly there are costs (computers, oversight, RapidShare accounts, etc.) for these people that set up the forums and yet membership is free. Most of the forums seem to have a lot of the same downloads if they have any at all.
What I'm getting at is what's in it for them?
For me, aside from the curiosity, is this underlying fear that some board is just a front for some government agency keeping track of what I might download while they wait to raid my house.....Not that it keeps me up at night.
Any thoughts?

I'm joined Rapidaway.com for some time now and the cops haven't knocked on my door.
Some will give you a certain free amount and also have the option to go premium which gives you x amount of points for the price you pay, thats how they cover costs along with ads you might have to click and so on. The ones that do it right can make a profit. There are alot that don't have premium members that rely on ads but give a small amount of free downloads and alot of them seem to use the same script.

Rapidaway.com...ok i made an account with these after downloading a couple of files i returned later to find my password and login were not being recognised....I later decided to make another account(as the last account was not working) which was ok until i tried to grab a link when i was directed to this delightful message...

I then notice i am able to go to the forums under my second account still(even though i am banned..go figure)?Here i find a thread titled ..

Well guys how many other accounts have you deliberately made "Account unknown" so that the user tries to re-register so that you can get a payment out of them???


My advice dont bother 6 Euros is not to much for a legit rapidshare account...Plus 9 times out of ten these gens dont work (corrupt downloads) or you arrive to late"All bandwidth is used Up" Any site that asks you to register for the privledge of downloading i would avoid like the plague now...

The occasional ones that do work dont last long and are usually hard to find..

I got a similar notification along with a subsequent begging letter. Then a week later I got another in which they complained about their advertisers refusing to pay up and if every member coughed up $5 they could meet their costs for a few more weeks. I can't wait for the next email, it's turning into a great little soap opera.

What happened was google refused to pay so donation thing was put up for people to donate if they wanted. Now the ad system has been sorted with another system. Also if you want to use a site to download rapidshare links for free you can't complain if they have a bit of trouble and ask for help. As for your issue ChirpyChippy i don't think rapidaway make users unknown, since you got banned it sounds like you entered the wrong name to me, it has happened to me on other sites.
