The Candlestick Course

http://i44.tinypic.com/2urs9pt.jpg

Steve Nison revolutionized the world of technical analysis when his two bestselling books introduced Japanese candlestick charting techniques to the western world. "Candles," he discovered, can signal shifts in trends and price patterns with amazing accuracy, and these "storyteller" charts also contain powerful applications for today’s volatile short-term markets.

In The Candlestick Course, Nison breaks new ground once again. From the basics through the more complex stages of pattern recognition, each chapter includes specific learning objectives, key terms, clear-cut instruction, and practical applications. Plus, each end-of-chapter quiz allows readers to perfect their charting abilities before moving on. This book is the ideal training tool for newcomers, and perfect for veterans looking to refine and hone their skills.

Focused on the needs of today’s active traders and investors, Nison:

* Provides a solid foundation to candlestick charts–reinforcing key skills as you go
* Reveals how to pinpoint critical market opportunities as they arise, by recognizing key candle signals
* Tests your ability to accurately analyze and interpret candle charts
* Demonstrates how candlestick concepts can trigger potent decision-support tools that can confirm–or enhance–buy/sell signals
* Includes a valuable "progressive charting" case study
* Ties all the aspects of candlesticks together through interactive examples and visual tests

Whether viewed as a supplement to Steve Nison’s other books and courses, or as your introduction to candlestick charting, this course book will familiarize you with the intriguing world of The Morning Star, The Hammer, The Dark Cloud Cover–and the many other powerful and precise patterns Nison shares with fellow traders and investors.

Not just a one-time read, The Candlestick Course can be used as a valuable reference source, and quick refresher course, time and again.

Why Are There So Many Banking Crises?

http://i43.tinypic.com/20r8ro3.jpg

Among economists' explanations are moral hazard, ill-judged capital adequacy rules and the incompetence of supervisors. Jean-Charles Rochet, a leading authority on banking, argues the real problem lies with politicians who too often insist on rescuing insolvent banks for short-term reasons of their own. [W]hatever the verdict on the policy proposals, the book makes interesting reading in current circumstances.

Instant Income

http://i42.tinypic.com/28bvb53.jpg

In her first solo book, entrepreneur Switzer (co-author, with Jack Canfield, of The Success Principles) offers practical insights for business owners in a fast-paced text jam-packed with useful information and tricks of the marketing trade. Designed to bring in customers and cash, Switzer's guide builds on small business basics and provides authoritative strategy in an impressive number of areas: customers, joint-ventures, advertising, prospecting, sales, the internet, apprenticeships, negotiating deals and "earning extra income whenever you need it." Switzer is a firm believer in research, promoting the theory that the best marketing campaigns gather as much knowledge as possible about potential customers-their problems, needs and goals-in order to avoid the "customer complaints, returns, and refunds" generated by "selling prospects something they don't need." Packed with advice on everything from "Writing ads that make the phone ring" to "Launching a viral report" to "Going into business with the boss," as well as endorsements from Switzer's satisfied advisees, this book is a valuable resource for anyone who owns a small business or is interested in making some extra money; media-savvy consumers may also find this book useful in navigating the marketing forces that bombard them daily.

To Hell and Back

http://i40.tinypic.com/2416udz.jpg

One of the first titles to arise from the ashes of the stock market, CFP-financial analyst Stern's book is based on personal experience. He boils down the fundamentals of investing into nuggets of easy-to-grasp information. One example is a simple yet thorough explanation of the economy and the business cycle, along with key indicators. Another is his stock-picking tips, from comparisons (the right way) to classic mistakes. Yet another is information on spotting the trends, accompanied by checklists and a few stellar recommendations. He's quick to add two caveats: he advocates disciplined investing (e.g., review holdings once a month), and he insists that no one individual, no one company, can predict with 100 percent accuracy the inevitability of a recession or business contraction. Written with humility and humor--a rare combination.

The Symmetry Wave Trading Method

http://i42.tinypic.com/2iu4407.jpg

This book is an alternative to Elliott Wave theory. It is objective where as Elliott Wave theory is subjective. That is Elliott Wave changes its labeling of the price swings as the swings change. Whereas, Symmetry Wave being objective does not change its labeling of the price swings. It is a revolutionary idea that clusters correction of smaller sizes together to bring clarity to the price swings. Michael is the first person, publicly, to use Average True Range (ATR) for protective stop and profit target. I love using ATR as the stop method, because it uses the current volatility of the market to help me decide the profit target and the protective stop.

Mathematical Techniques in Financial Market Trading

http://i39.tinypic.com/21kmiog.jpg

The present book contains much more materials than the author's previous book The Science of Financial Market Trading. Spectrum analysis is again emphasized for the characterization of technical indicators employed by traders and investors. New indicators are created. Mathematical analysis is applied to evaluate the trading methodologies practiced by traders to execute a trade transaction. In addition, probability theory is employed to appraise the utility of money management techniques. The book: identifies the faultiness of some of the indicators used by traders and accentuates the potential of wavelets as a trading tool; describes the scientific evidences that the market is non-random, and that the non-randomness can vary with respect to time; demonstrates the validity of the claim by some traders that, with good money management techniques, the market is still profitable even if it were random; and analyzes why a popular trading tactic has a good probability of success and how it can be improved.

The Strategic Electronic Day Trader

http://i41.tinypic.com/33jh4jb.jpg

Anyone with a computer can day trade, but day trading clearly isn't for every one. In fact, as Robert Deel makes clear in The Strategic Electronic Day Trader, only a very few who try it will survive and prosper. Deel, who has trained thousands of traders in the last decade, says 92 percent will lose money in the first two years, and only 2 percent will make money on a consistent basis. He compares the challenge to war: "Most battles are won or lost in the preparation stage, long before the first shot is fired. Trading is high-tech warfare. Never underestimate your opponents. Remember, if you are not the marksman, you are the target."

The first six chapters explain what every day trader needs to know: how to read the NASDAQ level-two screen; order routing, execution methods, and rules; and trading through the Electronic Communications Networks (ECNs). Included are sections on charting and technical indicators with specific advice for adapting these to very short-term trading strategies. Deel shows how to create screens and filters to identify high probability/profitability trades, and he discusses the best times of the day to trade and when and how to go short. Also included is a section on recommended hardware configurations and proper setup of the trading environment.

In final chapters, Deel describes "the biomechanical trader" who prepares for battle through an intense process of mental training and conditioning that includes biofeedback, meditation, visualization, and hypnosis. This is a practical, easily understood presentation of what it takes to be one of the few who will succeed as marksmen. --Scott Harrison

An inside view of what makes market neutral strategies tick and how they can be implemented

Market neutral strategies have gained attention for their potential to deliver positive returns regardless of the direction of underlying markets. As these strategies have built a record of good performance in recent years, their benefits have become apparent. Market Neutral Strategies draws on the wisdom and experience of professional practitioners to describe strategies that are being utilized by some of today's leading institutional investors. This book provides readers with an insider's view of what makes these strategies work and how they can be implemented successfully. Topics covered include long-short equity and convertibles, fixed income and merger arbitrage; the tax and ERISA implications of market neutral investing; and the failure of two notorious "market neutral" ventures, Askin Capital Management and Long-Term Capital Management.

Bruce I. Jacobs (Florham Park, NJ) and Kenneth N. Levy are cofounders and principals of Jacobs Levy Equity Management, in Florham Park, New Jersey. Point & Figure Charting: The Essential Application for Forecasting and Tracking Market Prices

http://i40.tinypic.com/2h3ty5s.jpg

Today's investment industry is filled with a variety of new strategies that can be used to evaluate market price movements, but many of these methods never seem to deliver on what they promise. There is one approach to investment analysis, however, that has proven itself in all types of markets, and it's called Point and Figure Charting.

In the Third Edition of Point and Figure Charting, the world's top Point and Figure charting expert, Tom Dorsey returns to explain how traders and investors alike can use this classic technique-borne out of the irrefutable laws of supply and demand-to identify and capitalize on market trends. Within these pages, Dorsey describes, step-by-step, how to create, maintain, and interpret your own Point and Figure charts with regard to markets, sectors, and individual securities. He then explains how to use these findings to track and forecast market prices and develop an overall investment strategy.

The Little Book That Makes You Rich

http://i44.tinypic.com/29e21yb.jpg

Self confessed numbers geek Navellier has developed what he claims is an effective and durable system to beat the stock market, long thought a money-loser by financiers due to its self-correcting nature. Rather than focus on one or two indicators, Navellier has weighted a basket of eight variables ("earnings revisions," "operating margins," "free cash flow," etc.), a quantitative strategy he shares in complex detail and happily accessible prose. Looking into the hows and whys of stock performance, Navellier lays open the complex economic environment and explicates his eight indicators in depth, showing how they relate to the market and the real world. Though he relates choosing stocks to everyday activities such as household budgeting and sports ("Never fall in love with your second baseman or your stocks"), his precise "by the numbers" approach is far removed from emotional interference. Still, he does take into account investors' personal preferences and predicament-risk level, stress, age, tax situation and so on. Providing numerous successful examples of his system's past performance, one can't help but wonder how long this system will continue to yield results; still, this good-natured guidebook will help anyone new to investing or interested in learning a new way to look at the market.

http://i44.tinypic.com/2pt0zv5.jpg

Strategic Investment: Real Options and Games provides a powerful synthesis of modern corporate finance and corporate strategy. Its arrival could not be more timely for the practice of strategic management. Cumulative developments in finance science and innovations in financial technology over the past three decades have had a profound impact on financial markets and financial institutions globally. However, their influence on the practice of strategic corporate finance has been far more limited. That is changing and as a consequence one can anticipate significant opportunities for innovation in strategic advice and its implementation in the impending future. Who better to prepare us for it than Han Smit and Lenos Trigeorgis, with their combined experiences as serious academic researchers, skilled consultants, and seasoned teachers? Their carefully constructed text uses actual case settings and hypothetical situations to exemplify the power of combining real options and game theory to clarify and quantify strategic analysis of the firm. Whether MBA student or seasoned professional, the reader is in for a treat: Bon Appetit!

Digital Day Trading; Moving from One Winning Stock Position to the Next

http://i40.tinypic.com/2vxf5gn.jpg

Within the subject of investing, the big buzz is over day trading. A day trader is someone who establishes a market position at some point during the day but who exits the position before the close of day. Day traders make money by making a lot of trades that take advantage of even small fluctuations in price. They also have the benefit of not having to worry about events that take place after the market closes that may have an effect on prices. The volatility of the market and the ready market access afforded by online trading accounts have made day trading an attractive option. Abell is an executive with the Innergame Division of Rand Financial Services, a Chicago-based futures clearing member. His advice assumes a basic knowledge of the technology necessary for online investing. He provides step-by-step guidance on getting set up and describes various trading strategies and tactics. Abell emphasizes the need for a personal strategy and a business plan, stressing that no system is perfect. David Rouse

The Making of Modern Economics: The Lives and Ideas of the Great Thinkers

http://i43.tinypic.com/11uxphx.jpg

Skousen, author, editor, and academic, tells the story of the development of economic thought, describing his approach as " . . . a candid, irreverent, passionate, sometimes humorous and often highly opinionated account of the lives and theories of famous economists from Adam Smith and Karl Marx to John Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman." The author's unique view compares the development of economic thought to the construction of a building, designating Adam Smith's 1776 Wealth of Nations as the foundation. He contends that Smith's philosophy of natural liberty and the invisible hand was a sound foundation that created a new era of wealth and economic growth spanning two centuries. With the inclusion of photographs, diagrams, commentaries, and even appropriate music selections, each chapter is devoted to a major economist and his theories, showing how he added to or detracted from Smith's positions. Skousen ends on an optimistic note even as fighting continues over which economic policies to pursue in times of crisis, uncertainty, and globalization.

Stock Market Wizards: Interviews with America's Top Stock Traders

http://i42.tinypic.com/23u35lv.jpg

Newcomers to Jack Schwager's series on top traders, as well as fervent fans of his first two entries Market Wizards and The New Market Wizards, will find that Stock Market Wizards offers another revealing look at a wide spectrum of trading styles through the eyes of 15 extraordinarily successful individuals. Transcripts of incisive Q&A sessions between Schwager and traders--including Michael Lauer, Dana Galante, Alphonse "Buddy" Fletcher Jr., and Claudio Guazzoni--examine the ways each approaches their specialty, whether it be value stocks, mutual funds, short selling, options trading, or other market niches. After brief but interesting introductions that place the subjects' trading practices into perspective, Schwager coaxes from them penetrating observations on setting goals, finding opportunities, learning from mistakes, and operating on a day-to-day basis. While some participants refuse to divulge proprietary practices, and Anthony admits that many traders' activities hold little relevance to individual investors, the basic doctrines nonetheless contain nuggets of wisdom that can be applied by many nonprofessionals. And, in the final "Wizard Lessons" chapter, Schwager details the 65 overarching principles (such as Trade Your Personality, Be Willing to Take a Loss, and The Importance of Setting Goals) he culled from these extensive conversations.

How I Trade for a Living

http://i39.tinypic.com/f1blvq.jpg

Gary Smith was bitten by the trading bug at the age of fourteen, and ever since he’s thought of little else other than how to make a fortune as a home-based trader. He bought his first stock in 1966, when he was just a college sophomore, and then spent the next two decades unsuccessfully chasing his childhood dream. Finally, in 1985, nearly bankrupt and ready to quit, Gary Smith had an epiphany that changed everything—and since then he hasn’t had a losing year and rarely even a losing month. His trading account has mushroomed from $2,200 to nearly $1 million. What did Gary discover on that fateful day in 1985? How did he achieve his phenomenal fifteen-year winning streak and earn an international reputation as one of the most successful home-based traders ever? Find out in How I Trade for a Living. What you won’t find in How I Trade for a Living are knotty mathematical formulas, complex technical indicators, heavy charts, or elaborate software demands. What you will find is a simple, straightforward approach to home-based trading that can be used by virtually anyone, anywhere. Unlike most "experts" writing today, Gary Smith has actually made it as a home-based trader. Step by step, Smith outlines his low-risk trading strategies and explains how to use them to trade stock index futures and mutual funds—his preferred vehicles—as well as individual stocks, options, futures, and junk bonds. He acquaints you with his favorite indicators and tells you how to get the most out of them. He offers a wealth of tips on recognizing market trends and riding them for all they’re worth. You’ve heard what the "experts" have to say about trading the markets. Now find out how it’s really done from a consummate pro in How I Trade for a Living.

The Wall Street Waltz: 90 Visual Perspectives, Illustrated Lessons From Financial Cycles and Trends

http://i39.tinypic.com/2vn4e3o.jpg

On the surface, Wall Street always seems to be changing. But if you dig a little deeper, you'll quickly see that while events and curious phenomena enter and exit the scene almost daily, nothing really important has changed over the years. In fact, much of what happens in the financial world today has been played out in history many times before and has been captured in the cycles and trends of financial charts created over time. Understanding the movements within these charts provides a clearer perspective of today's market and can help you make the best possible investment decisions tomorrow.

As a successful money manager and respected financial columnist, Ken Fisher understands the importance of this information and now, with a revised and updated edition of The Wall Street Waltz, he brings it to life through 90 of the most revealing and provocative financial charts ever assembled. Many of the charts in this reliable resource are snapshots of modern financial markets—which reveal how stocks relate to sales, earnings, dividends, cash flows, and assets—while others include early twentieth-century originals, and new charts of even older events. In each case, Fisher provides what he calls a visualization, in which he analyzes each chart according to its origin, historical significance, and most importantly, its relevance to today's market.

Business the Richard Branson Way: 10 Secrets of the World's Greatest Brand Builder

http://i43.tinypic.com/2cen2c5.jpg

Is there anything new to say about the four high-profile corporate executives featured in this series? The work of Dearlove and Crainer, two British business writers, suggests that there is not. Their texts consist of quotes from previous books and articles held together by statements that appear to have little to legitimize them. The authors give no indication of the source of their opinions, facts, and speculation. For each executive, there are ten "secrets" on which the analysis of his management style is based. Although the other three executives are referred to in each book, there is no attempt at comparative analysis. For example, for Murdoch, ruthlessness is cited as a secret of success, with the belief that "nice guys finish second." But Branson's common touch with customers and staff alike is the key to his popularity and success. Go figure. The quality of the writing is uneven and frequently repetitious, but there is an easygoing approach that makes all four books appealing for a quick read. Undergraduate term-paper writers and casual readers who have heard these names may appreciate the one-stop biography/management style content. Graduate students, businesspeople, and other specialists will pass on these books in search of more solid content

Stocks for the Long Run : The Definitive Guide to Financial Market Returns and Long-Term Investment Strategies

http://i44.tinypic.com/b8s12h.jpg

Given the daily and sometimes extreme fluctuations in the stock market, it takes an investor with both nerve and patience to build and maintain a long-term portfolio. But Siegel, a Wharton School professor of finance who directs the Securities Industry Association Institute, argues that, historically, stocks are safer and more productive, over the long run, than most other forms of investment. He explains how to calculate stock returns and examines some of the more technical aspects of analyzing stocks. Siegel also discusses the relationships between the economy, politics, and the stock market, offers basic trading rules, and lays out guidelines for building a portfolio. Though he covers some of the more sophisticated aspects of investing, Siegel targets a general but informed investing public.

Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk

http://i41.tinypic.com/4kcmir.jpg

Risk management, which assumes that future risks can be understood, measured and to some extent predicted, is the focus of this solid, thoroughgoing history. Probability theory, pioneered by 17th-century French mathematicians Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat, has made possible the design of great bridges, electric power utilities and insurance policies. The statistical sampling methods invented by dour Swiss scientist Jacob Bernoulli undergird diverse activities such as the testing of new drugs, stock-picking and wine tasting. Bernstein (Capital Ideas) animates his narrative with a colorful cast of risk-analyzers, including gambling addict Girolamo Cardano, 16th-century Italian physician to the Pope; and John Maynard Keynes, whose concerns over economic uncertainty compelled him to recommend an active, interventionist role for government. Bernstein also traces the development of business forecasting, game theory, insurance and derivatives, and surveys recent advances in risk forecasting made possible through chaos theory and by the development of neural networks.

How can you join the ranks of America's wealthy (defined as people whose net worth is over one million dollars)? It's easy, say doctors Stanley and Danko, who have spent the last 20 years interviewing members of this elite club: you just have to follow seven simple rules. The first rule is, always live well below your means. The last rule is, choose your occupation wisely. You'll have to buy the book to find out the other five. It's only fair. The authors' conclusions are commonsensical. But, as they point out, their prescription often flies in the face of what we think wealthy people should do. There are no pop stars or athletes in this book, but plenty of wall-board manufacturers--particularly ones who take cheap, infrequent vacations! Stanley and Danko mercilessly show how wealth takes sacrifice, discipline, and hard work, qualities that are positively discouraged by our high-consumption society. "You aren't what you drive," admonish the authors. Somewhere, Benjamin Franklin is smiling.

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns

http://i39.tinypic.com/nb7sqf.jpg

Investing is all about common sense. Owning a diversified portfolio of stocks and holding it for the long term is a winner’s game. Trying to beat the stock market is theoretically a zero-sum game (for every winner, there must be a loser), but after the substantial costs of investing are deducted, it becomes a loser’s game. Common sense tells us—and history confirms—that the simplest and most efficient investment strategy is to buy and hold all of the nation’s publicly held businesses at very low cost. The classic index fund that owns this market portfolio is the only investment that guarantees you with your fair share of stock market returns.

To learn how to make index investing work for you, there’s no better mentor than legendary mutual fund industry veteran John C. Bogle. Over the course of his long career, Bogle—founder of the Vanguard Group and creator of the world’s first index mutual fund—has relied primarily on index investing to help Vanguard’s clients build substantial wealth. Now, with The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, he wants to help you do the same.

Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing will show you how to incorporate this proven investment strategy into your portfolio. It will also change the very way you think about investing. Successful investing is not easy. (It requires discipline and patience.) But it is simple. For it’s all about common sense.

Mean Markets and Lizard Brains: How to Profit from the New Science of Irrationality

http://i40.tinypic.com/hs4brr.jpg

Everyone from journalists to market pros are turning to behavioral finance to explain, analyze, and predict market direction. In contrast to old-school assumptions of cool-headed rationality, the new behavioral school embraces hot-blooded human irrationality as a core feature of both individuals and financial markets. The 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to scholars of this new scientific approach to irrationality. In Mean Markets and Lizard Brains, Terry Burnham, an economist who has a proven ability to translate complex topics into everyday language, reveals the biological causes of irrationality. The human brain contains ancient structures that exert powerful and often unconscious influences on behavior. This "lizard brain" may have helped our ancestors eat and reproduce, but it wreaks havoc with our finances. Going far beyond cataloguing our financial foibles, Dr. Burnham applies this novel approach to all of today's most important financial topics: the stock market, the economy, real estate, bonds, mortgages, inflation, and savings. This broad and scholarly investigation provides an in-depth look at why manias, panics, and crashes happen, and why people are built to want to buy at irrationally high prices and sell at irrationally low prices. Most importantly, by incorporating the new science of irrationality, readers can position themselves to profit from financial markets that often seem downright mean. Mean Markets and Lizard Brains skillfully identifies the craziness that is part of human nature, helps us see it in ourselves, and then shows us how to profit from a world that doesn't always make sense.

Sell and Sell Short

http://i41.tinypic.com/25unyut.jpg

Selling is the hard part of trading. If the stock we buy rises, when do we take profits? If our stock falls, when do we bite the bullet and exit the trade? If our stock stagnates, when do we say enough is enough and move on to another opportunity? Every serious trader must make these decisions.

Beginners and amateurs invest the bulk of their time in looking for new trades. Many become pre-occupied with finding some magic combination of indicators that will always identify good stocks. They assume that if they get the entry right, the trade will take care of itself. Professionals, on the contrary, understand that monitoring the reward-to-risk ratio of an open position and exiting at the right price and time is absolutely fundamental to their success.

If perfection is possible anywhere, it is certainly not in trading. No one can consistently pick the absolute tops and bottoms. Good trading means taking reasonable profits and limiting losses. Reaching for extremes is not a viable long-term strategy. Leaving some money on the table is a normal and even positive thing. When it comes to profits in trading, the power word is "enough." A mature trader knows when to exit.

In Sell and Sell Short, Dr. Alexander Elder explains how to set profit targets and stop-loss orders prior to entering any trade. He shares real-world examples that show how to manage your position by adjusting your exit points as the trade unfolds.

Getting an Investing Game Plan: Creating It, Working It, Winning It

http://i39.tinypic.com/2093x45.jpg

Over the years, countless investors have lost far more than they should have during a variety of market downturns. Events such as the bursting of the tech bubble and the wave of corporate scandals have led to investor woes, but it’s the absence of an investing game plan that has made things even worse. This lack of personal financial guidance leaves many investors scrambling to figure out what they should do after the fact, instead of planning ahead of time.

But exactly what is an investing game plan and how can you go about getting one? In Getting an Investing Game Plan, Certified Financial Planner Vern Hayden answers these and other important investment questions, guiding you through a ten-step process that will help you clarify your goals, create a game plan, and stay the course.

In a straightforward and accessible manner, Getting an Investing Game Plan explains why you need a game plan for both wealth creation and wealth preservation, and clearly outlines the components of a successful investing game plan. Shaped from the experiences gained in the mud of the marketplace as well as stories of real investors, these proven steps will help you get your investing house in order–whether you’re starting fresh or starting over.

Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets and in Life, First Edition

http://i41.tinypic.com/ixxjew.jpg

In this look at financial luck, hedge fund manager Taleb (Dynamic Hedging) addresses the apparently irrational movement of money markets around the world. Using his own investing experience and examples of others' successes and disappointments, he discusses theories like Monte Carlo math (easy; considered cheating by purists) and the concept of Russian roulette. Taleb tells interesting, well-wrought stories about individual behavior: "While Nero has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, both personally and intellectually, he is starting to consider himself as having missed a chance somewhere." While serious investors and mathematics enthusiasts will be intrigued, readers looking for practical investment strategies will be disappointed by this rambling intellectual discourse. Tables. 40,000-copy first printing; $150,000 marketing budget.

Stan Weinstein's Secrets For Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets

http://i42.tinypic.com/wbe0r8.jpg

Reading this book will tell you a simple, effective way to trade on charts. No nonsense, no complex indicators, no sigma notation mathematical sequences, just basic, effective trading techniques.

It is for longer term trading, perhaps 3 months or more, depending on how long the stock trends upward. This is probably the best longer term trading method I have seen. It is so basic you may already know most of it (unless you are just starting), but this book puts chart reading into a simple, practical method that can be mastered. One of the problems I had with CANSLIM was when to sell. Reading this book will give what I consider a good answer on when to take profits. And, like the book says, go short.

I wouldn't say Weinstein's methods are "secrets," they are just 100% common sense, and very effective. CANSLIM investors may find this a very useful book on expanding charting knowledge.

Risk Management and Value Creation in Financial Institutions

http://i42.tinypic.com/28ksrvm.jpg

Increased competition among banks as well as pressure from shareholders for superior returns have forced financial institutions to focus on managing their value. But the idea of viewing risk management activities in banks from a risk-return perspective–and hence in the context of value creation–has not been analyzed on an industry or bank level until very recently.

Risk Management and Value Creation in Financial Institutions offers a close look at this subject by exploring both the theory and practice of corporate risk management in financial institutions. Author Gerhard Schroeck lays the foundations for developing a model that would allow banks to identify comparative advantages, examining where they should concentrate their risk management activities and how they should structure them. The book’s valuable insights provide financial intermediaries with a detailed analysis of the link between risk management and value creation, and will help them build economic value.

Schroeck starts with an investi-gation of this link by defining and discussing value maximization and risk management within a banking context. He also addresses whether there is empirical evidence that may connect the two. Schroeck then explores different financial theories on risk management and value creation, and shows you how to create a framework that encompasses both of them.

Candlestick and Pivot Point Trading

http://i43.tinypic.com/e7hua1.jpg

With instant electronic market access and powerful financial tools at their disposal, today's "technician"—one who practices the art of technical analysis—has more opportunities than ever before to profitably trade in a variety of markets. But in order to truly excel, you need a method that will allow you to identify market moves, and strategies that will allow you to make the most of those moves.

John Person has been in the trading business for almost thirty years—as a broker, a trader, and a teacher of traders. During this time, he's refined his trading skills and, by using candlestick formations in conjunction with pivot points, developed a reliable methodology that will help you make smarter trades with less risk.

In his first book, A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics, Person introduced traders to the concept of integrating candlestick charting with pivot point analysis. Now, in Candlestick and Pivot Point Trading Triggers, he goes a step further and shows you how to devise your own setups and triggers—in the stock, forex, and futures markets—based on a moving average approach.

How I Became a Quant: Insights from 25 of Wall Street's Elite

http://i39.tinypic.com/ixvy0x.jpg

The "quants"——Wall Street's disciples of quantitative analysis——have become the mar-ket's new superstars. Their mathematical models are now the basis for such financial market innovations as exotic derivatives, structured investment products, quantitative trading strategies, and portfolio selection.

What brought about this path-breaking investment revolution? Some cite the beginning of trading in exchange-listed equity options in 1973, while others credit the arrival of desktop computing around 1980. But perhaps the most important factor was the dramatic increase in the volatility of prices. It was this aversion to increasing uncertainty experienced by financial market participants——real, living, breathing people—that led to the quant revolution. So who are these people who develop the mathematical models that create new ways to allow people to modify their exposure to risk? How do they do what they do? Where did they come from? In How I Became a Quant, you will find firsthand accounts direct from the people who were swept into, and then helped fashion, today's "quant-driven," dynamic world of finance.

These unlikely superstars of Wall Street now provide the intellectual horsepower to fulfill the dream of unlimited ability to manage risks through trading financial instruments. These are the stories behind their careers.

Planetary Stock Trading

http://i43.tinypic.com/maujpc.jpg

A compilation of 1000 first-trade charts, which is a chart set for the moment a stock is first traded on the NYSE. Unlike incorporation charts, first trade charts show the ups & downs of trading (ie, stock prices), rather than the ups & downs of the corporation behind the stock (makes sense to us). This is the book to use if you want to be a day trader. Find a chart that's about to be hit with a lot of transits all at once (go to the appendix, grab yor ephemeris) & either buy & watch the price go up, or borrow & short sell them. Tips & techniques, many sample charts, lots of analysis. Among the 1000 charts are the complete Dow Jones & many S&P, OTC & NASDAC stocks, as well as charts of selected mutual funds, foreign funds (NYSE) & the FTSE (London). Also included are charts for the various exchanges themselves. Meridian & Alphee Lavoie of A.I.R. Software have written a computer trading program (not included), the price of that is around $1000. The book is a lot cheaper, & it's the best ever book on astrology & investments. Valuable book for traders, written by one who knows.

Investment Risk Management

http://i43.tinypic.com/2q03h4z.jpg

Recent market boom-busts have happened, and will continue to happen partly because apparently reputable institutions oversell risky or worthless investments.

Following Enron, Worldcom, Equitable Life and other scandals it is apparent that a new investment methodology is required to protect investors. Rather then relying on market reputation, investors need to be able to look past the sales hype to discover the true situation.

Operational risk management and a forensic investigation of investment provide the groundwork for such a methodology. Investment Risk Management explains

* why market boom-busts occur in the trade of worthless stocks
* why regulators react slowly to investment scams
* when pension funds fail to protect their investors
* when investors pay for worthless 'professional' services
* how companies pay too much for management 'stars'
* whether Basel II and IAS accounting rules protect the investor

M&A Titans: The Pioneers Who Shaped Wall Street's Mergers and Acquisitions Industry

http://i43.tinypic.com/307nf5e.jpg

This book focuses on the 11 men, lawyers and bankers, who are responsible for the creation of Wall Street's merger industry. It specifically concentrates on the events and personalities who dominated Wall Street during the takeover battles of the 1970s and 1980s. Lawyers Joe Flom and Marty Lipton, the godfathers of modern M&A, educated bankers on takeover laws and regulations as well as tactics. Flom and Lipton were also superlative businessmen who built their own firms to become Wall Street powerhouses. The two men drew into their orbit a circle of bankers. Felix Rohatyn, Ira Harris, Steve Friedman, Geoff Boisi, Eric Gleacher and Bruce Wasserstein were close to Lipton. Robert Greenhill and Joe Perella were close to Flom.

M&A Titans provides insight into the culture of the different investment banks and how each of the bankers influenced the firms they worked in as they became more powerful. Some such as Gleacher, Harris, Wasserstein, Perella and Greenhill clashed with the men running their firms and left. Others such as Friedman and Boisi stayed and profoundly influenced how the firm did business. The career of Michael Milken, perhaps the notorious name on Wall Street in the 1980s, is also examined as well as the actions and tactics of his firm, Drexel Burnham Lambert. Milken and Drexel paved the way for the growth of private equity and helped popularize attacks on management by investors such as Boone Pickens and Carl Icahn.

Just One Thing: Twelve of the World's Best Investors Reveal the One Strategy You Can't Overlook

http://i43.tinypic.com/1yft5.jpg

Whether from business-focused cable TV channels, newspapers, magazines, Web sites, or friends and family, investment advice comes these days from every corner. The nagging question for conscientious investors remains, though: how to separate good advice from bad? In a world of squawking television commentators and garish headlines, who and what should we trust? With Just One Thing, veteran investment writer John Mauldin offers his answer: take just the best advice, from the best investors, and discard everything else. Mauldin has solicited 12 leading investors for what each considers his most valuable insight or lesson over a long and illustrious investment career--the "one thing" he considers most important to investing--and gathered the tips for future generations of investors to learn.

The lessons which Mauldin has compiled in this thin, readable volume range widely. Some readers may enjoy the folksier tone of hedge fund manager Andy Kessler's piece, which analogizes investing to a hike up New England's Mt. Washington, on a foggy day. Other may prefer the approach of bond investor Gary Shilling, who argues for finding and developing a consistent and long-term narrative (or "story" about a market) around which to build investment picks. Yet others may find it most comforting to go with financial analyst Rob Arnott, who runs a multi-billion dollar fund for Pimco and who anchors his market analysis in deep skepticism and extensive quantitative analytics.

Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

http://i44.tinypic.com/23t121d.jpg

This book succeeds at analyzing sociological developments in a way that is entertaining because Steven Levitt, an economist who strays from convention, has a knack for unpeeling layers and layers of assumptions and myth and showing the real causes behind trends. He shows, to name some examples, how our names affect our career paths; how abortion and the crime rate are related; how a man used his cunning to humiliate the Klu Klux Klan rather than rely on conventional methods; how easy it is to identify the role of public school teachers when they help their students cheat on standardized tests; why drug dealing is only lucrative for the dealers at the top of the pyramid; the myth that real estate agents are looking for our best interests.

The book, co-authored by Stephen J. Dubner, is breezy and anecdotal, which is an effective format for presenting a lot of sociological trends without being dry or losing the scintillating reportage in dense prose.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

http://i43.tinypic.com/71pb9l.jpg

Perkins spent the 1970s working as an economic planner for an international consulting firm, a job that took him to exotic locales like Indonesia and Panama, helping wealthy corporations exploit developing nations as, he claims, a not entirely unwitting front for the National Security Agency. He says he was trained early in his career by a glamorous older woman as one of many "economic hit men" advancing the cause of corporate hegemony. He also says he has wanted to tell his story for the last two decades, but his shadowy masters have either bought him off or threatened him until now. The story as presented is implausible to say the least, offering so few details that Perkins often seems paranoid, and the simplistic political analysis doesn’t enhance his credibility. Despite the claim that his work left him wracked with guilt, the artless prose is emotionally flat and generally comes across as a personal crisis of conscience blown up to monstrous proportions, casting Perkins as a victim not only of his own neuroses over class and money but of dark forces beyond his control. His claim to have assisted the House of Saud in strengthening its ties to American power brokers may be timely enough to attract some attention, but the yarn he spins is ultimately unconvincing, except perhaps to conspiracy buffs.

The Well Timed Strategy: Managing the Business Cycle for Competitive Advantage

http://i41.tinypic.com/2hekpzb.jpg

Most companies ignore one of their best opportunities for honing competitive advantage: proactively managing the business cycle and broader macroeconomic turbulence. In The Well-Timed Strategy, Peter Navarro reveals why the business cycle is an even more powerful P&L driver than you may realize, and demonstrates how it can be profitably managed.

Navarro distills a set of clear and compelling strategies and tactics for managing economic upswings and downswings, oil price spikes, currency crises, trade wars, and other severe macroeconomic shocks. Navarro’s "Master Cyclist" management principles address everything from inventory, production, and supply chains to marketing, pricing, acquisitions, and long-term capital investment. Navarro presents examples and case studies from around the globe, ranging from high tech to heavy industry, from Broadcom, Micron, and Cemex to Paccar and Xilinx, from Chinese entrepreneurs to large multinationals.

Clear, concise, and exceptionally readable, The Well-Timed Strategy makes complex business cycle strategy and tactics easy to understand–and even easier to act upon.

Game Over: How You Can Prosper in a Shattered Economy

http://i39.tinypic.com/vgufz8.jpg

You already know about the devastating recession we're in. Jobs are being cut by the tens of thousands. Real estate values are plummeting. Retirement plans and 401ks are going up in smoke. And then there's rising inflation. And whether we like it or not, higher gasoline prices again are right around the corner.

Then there's the ever-present confusion and dips in the stock market, and, whether we want to admit it or not, the fact that the world is finally beginning to run out of essential raw materials, such as silver, titanium, and, of course, oil.

Yes, the economy is definitely a wreck. Even worse, according to most experts, our problems are not going away soon. We're going to be in serious financial trouble for a long time.

So . . . are you ready for some good news?

As you will discover in GAME OVER, bestselling author and investment advisor Dr. Stephen Leeb shows you how to not only survive in the current economic maelstrom but actually find a way to thrive.

Dr. Leeb first tells you just how bad things are by exposing the basic suppositions of our institutions, and how quickly outdated they've become. Warning bells are sounding especially for Americans looking forward to a relaxing retirement and living off their savings, investments, Social Security, and Medicare. The time to sit up and take action is now.

Dr. Leeb provides a clear-cut and well-crafted financial road map to protect every investor in the years to come. Specifically, he reveals which key investments will steadily rise . . . the best ways to hedge surging inflation . . . and which sectors will boom.

Many will lose their savings, watch their investments shrink, and never fulfill their financial dreams. But with Dr. Leeb's advice, you can make sure yours come true.

http://i42.tinypic.com/2vb3h92.jpg

This book describes the trading strategies used by a professional stock trader in his own trading. The ideas come both from friends who are successful traders as well as his own experience with SOES trading. The author's intraday trend trading approach and his scalping method are both described in detail. He uses the setups daily in his own trading. This manual should prove valuable to the thousands of short term stock traders who seek to make their living from speculating on short term price swings. It is a toolbox for finding high probability trades for success as you trade the stock market. The technical ideas are primarily crafted around the personality of the NASDAQ market but may also be implemented in New York trades.

Niall Ferguson - The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World

Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of finance, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance.

Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot, lucre, moolah, readies, the wherewithal: Call it what you like, it matters. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, it’s the sinews of war. To revolutionaries, it’s the chains of labor. But in The Ascent of Money, Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress. What’s more, he reveals financial history as the essential backstory behind all history.

Through Ferguson’s expert lens familiar historical landmarks appear in a new and sharper financial focus. Suddenly, the civilization of the Renaissance looks very different: a boom in the market for art and architecture made possible when Italian bankers adopted Arabic mathematics. The rise of the Dutch republic is reinterpreted as the triumph of the world’s first modern bond market over insolvent Habsburg absolutism. And the origins of the French Revolution are traced back to a stock market bubble caused by a convicted Scot murderer.

With the clarity and verve for which he is known, Ferguson elucidates key financial institutions and concepts by showing where they came from. What is money? What do banks do? What’s the difference between a stock and a bond? Why buy insurance or real estate? And what exactly does a hedge fund do?

This is history for the present. Ferguson travels to post-Katrina New Orleans to ask why the free market can’t provide adequate protection against catastrophe. He delves into the origins of the subprime mortgage crisis.

Perhaps most important, The Ascent of Money documents how a new financial revolution is propelling the world’s biggest countries, India and China, from poverty to wealth in the space of a single generation—an economic transformation unprecedented in human history.

Yet the central lesson of the financial history is that sooner or later every bubble bursts—sooner or later the bearish sellers outnumber the bullish buyers, sooner or later greed flips into fear. And that’s why, whether you’re scraping by or rolling in it, there’s never been a better time to understand the ascent of money.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Niall Ferguson makes a strong, compelling case for the development of money and banking as a catalyst for the advancement of civilization. Yet while some critics praised his clear, comprehensible writing, punctuated with anecdotes and historical details, others were nonplussed by his explanations and narrative detours. Several critics also bemoaned the book's choppy and uneven structure—an echo of the episodic, six-part television series it was meant to accompany. So it seems the UK critics liked the book less because they had seen the show. Though perhaps best suited to readers with a fundamental understanding of financial terms and theories, Ferguson's latest work provides valuable insight into the inner workings of the global economy, past and present. For interested readers, it demonstrates how our current fiscal meltdown fits into the bigger historical picture and laments humanity's perennial inability to learn from this history.

"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms, Greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind".

Where greed is - goodness is not. Greed is simply insecurity, the dire need to use others, to use things as a means to uphold & define self. Greed is vile & totally unnecessary. Greed does not clarify by nullifies, it limits & binds. Greed is a destructive force which enslves both the greedy & the weak. Take another look.

Hello..

Its a true slogan "money never sleeps"..
We give all value to the money because money is a thing in which you can get anything in exchange of money..
If money is not in the world then it creates some problem..
Without money no one can live because on exchange of money you can buy anything like food, clothes, cars, house bla bla bla, you can get anything from money..
Thats why we said that money never sleeps..

That's what the system wants you to believe. How about a little simple co-operation. We're all in this together & if we realise that fact then we realise that we co-exist interdependently as well as independently.

Money is an external power which controls, money dictates how your life has to be lived. Money is not the root of all evil but it certainly is a problem & there can never be equality when there is any form of money.

We've got to see that we could have a far better life all round by moving on & stop being controlled by an impersonal & inhumane system. By co-operating we can have greater technology, better food production, better housing, better everything & most of all greater freedom.

Money is the limiting factor which is a cause of unnecessary suffering, exaggerated egotism. The simple fact is that no one can own anything. That is a serious delusion & one which the bankers & governments perpetuate. All the resources of this planet are our resources & our responsibility.

Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street

http://i43.tinypic.com/xnc0av.jpg

As described by Lewis, liar's poker is a game played in idle moments by workers on Wall Street, the objective of which is to reward trickery and deceit. With this as a metaphor, Lewis describes his four years with the Wall Street firm Salomon Brothers, from his bizarre hiring through the training program to his years as a successful bond trader. Lewis illustrates how economic decisions made at the national level changed securities markets and made bonds the most lucrative game on the Street. International Economic Indicators and Central Banks - Picker Anne

http://rapidshare.com/files/229611588/Picker_Anne_-_International_Economic_Indicators_and_Central_Banks.pdfWhether you're doing business overseas or seeking to diversify your portfolio through international investments, tracking global economic events as they occur is essential. One of the smartest ways to do this is by following the movement of international economic indicators and understanding how the decisions of foreign central banks can affect market behavior.
Author Anne Dolganos Picker is an international economist who began monitoring global market conditions long before it became fashionable. She's familiar with the investment implications of international indicators and central banks, and now, with this book, she provides insightful analysis that will help you make more informed investment decisions as you venture into foreign markets.
Divided into two comprehensive parts, International Economic Indicators and Central Banks offers detailed coverage of the primary indicators that major industrial countries—from Canada, China, Japan, and Australia to Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom—use to evaluate economic performance, and examines how their central banks create and carry out monetary policy. The European Monetary Union is also included in this discussion, since it is the umbrella organization for the three European countries covered here.
International Economic Indicators and Central Banks opens with a brief description of the bond, stock, and foreign exchange markets—since this is where investors respond to the news of central bank activities and the direction of economic indicators. Following this market introduction, Part I moves on to provide you with an eye-opening overview of central bank functions, and then hones in on the individual central banks of the countries previously mentioned. Here, you'll discover how these central banks operate, and why they influence economies and your investments.
Part II of the book deals with the nitty-gritty of market-moving international economic indicators—from where to find them and what they mean to when they're released. With each chapter devoted to a different country, you'll become familiar with indicators that are reliable gauges of a country's economic growth and discover how similar indicators may differ across geographical borders. Some of the indicators addressed include the United Kingdom's Gross Domestic Product statistics, Canada's Labour Force Survey (LFS), and Japan's Tankan Survey.
If you're not an economist, interpreting economic data and news can seem daunting. But with International Economic Indicators and Central Banks as your guide, you'll quickly learn how to do this and much more as you search for potentially profitable investment opportunities around the world.

The Living Wage: Lessons from the History of Economic Thought

http://i42.tinypic.com/fe027k.jpg

For the last decade a movement for providing workers with a living wage has been growing in the US. This book describes how great thinkers in the history of economic thought viewed the living wage and highlights how the ideas of the early economists such as Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill support the idea of a living wage and contrast with the ideas of more recent free-market economists who do not. The lessons we can learn from the contrasting ideas of both the early and recent economists will help us to think more clearly about the issues surrounding whether, how and why workers should be paid a living wage.

The book reviews the history of economic ideas related to the idea of the living wage. It presents a debate between two ideologies, the moral economy and the market economy, as captured by the need to sustain the workforce, enhance its capability and avoid the externality effects of low wages. It is unique in that it applies these concepts exclusively to labor. The book also breaks new ground by presenting Adam Smith as a moral economist who anticipated many of the arguments set forth by modern day advocates of the living wage. It shows how successive economic thinkers added to Smith's arguments for a living (subsistence) wage or found fault with those arguments. Throughout the book Donald Stabile draws out the lessons that this history of the economic thought about adequate wages has for the modern living wage movement.

Economists interested in the history of economic thought and labor issues will find this book a compelling read, as will academics and community groups advocating for a living wage.

Confessions of a Street Addict

http://i40.tinypic.com/wgvzua.jpg

Cramer, famous for appearing on CNBC as the "wild excitable guy [with]... a big mouth and lots of passion talking authoritatively about how you could make money by getting on the Net," recounts his turbulent dual career as hedge fund manager and media pundit. Cramer tells of his lifelong obsession with the market, beginning with childhood scenes of poring over daily stock listings. The story kicks into high gear once he starts juggling his law school course load so he can spend as much time as possible trading (over the phone, in the pre-Internet '80s). After that, the narrative's pace never relents from depictions of Cramer's early days at Goldman Sachs through the launch of his own fund, which led to magazine columns, a near-constant presence on TV, and TheStreet.com. Cramer's description of the financial news Web site's launch is ruthless, not just toward the executives whose scheming and mismanagement, he says, undermined TheStreet.com's success, but toward himself for hiring them and temporarily destroying his long-standing friendship with publishing fixture Marty Peretz. Cramer is equally self-recriminating about the effect his fanatical trading had on his personal life, but clearly still loves to linger over every major deal of his career (and a lot of the minor ones), even perhaps especially if they blew up in his face. This is a lively, informative portrait of the highest levels of finance and media in the last decade

Valuation for M&A: Building Value in Private Companies

http://i41.tinypic.com/wqp2q.jpg

There is too much mystery about what companies are worth. And there are too many bad investment and operational decisions made as a result. The problem is especially acute in the case of a private company that lacks the guidance of a stock market price. But accurate valuations are possible, and M&A deals can succeed for both buyers and sellers.

The authors of this book have provided valuation advisory services to hundreds of companies and thousands of corporate executives. Through their experience, they have developed techniques to accurately measure and successfully build value in companies. In Valuation for M&A: Building Value in Private Companies, they provide owners and managers of private companies and their prospective buyers with the tools to determine what their company’s value is, what drives that value, and how to enhance that value during an M&A and in daily operation–even when no stock price exists.

Written for business appraisers, CPAs, investment bankers, venture capitalists, and consultants, as well as for investors and managers of nonpublicly traded entities, this book is a toolkit of solutions for valuation and return on investment questions. It is also a road map to building value when operating a company and selling or buying one. Senior managers in most public companies focus on value every day, for their performance is reflected in the daily scorecard of their stock price. But private companies lack this market feedback. As a result, many private companies lack direction and underperform.

Valuation for M&A lays out the steps for measuring and managing value creation in nonpublicly traded entities, and helps investors, executives, and their advisors determine the optimum strategy to enhance both market value and strategic value and maximize return on investment. It provides a detailed guide for sellers and buyers to prepare for the sale and acquisition of a firm, spelling out how to identify, quantify, and qualify the synergies that increase value to strategic buyers.

Ichimoku Charts: An Introduction to Ichimoku Kinko Clouds

http://i39.tinypic.com/2n9gu2f.jpg

Candlesticks charts, although originating in Japan, now play an important role in technical analysis worldwide. Now, for the first time in English, this book presents the next stage of candlestick analysis - Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. Sometimes called Cloud Charts, this analysis adds moving averages to candlestick charts. But moving averages a little different from those traditionally used in the West. For trending markets, Cloud Charts add an essential tool for analysing near-term areas of support and resistance. The book covers the history of candlestick charts - explaining the context in which they developed. And then moves on to explain how in the 1930s a journalist, with the pseudonym Ichimoku Sanjin, started refining candlestick analysis by adding a series of moving averages. The book explains in detail how to construct Cloud Charts and how to interpret them. A chapter is devoted to the advanced analysis of Cloud charts, with an in-depth study of the Three Principles: Wave Principle, Price Target and Timespan Principle. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous examples of Cloud Chart analysis.Walk into any Japanese dealing room today and you will see that the most common charts being used are Ichimoku Kinko Clouds. The Complete TurtleTrader: The Legend, the Lessons, the Results

http://i39.tinypic.com/2u6eohs.jpg

Covel (Trend Following) revisits a famous financial trading experiment conducted by Wall Street trader Richard Dennis and extracts its lessons with mixed results. Dennis, who quickly learned how to trade after starting as a runner at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1966 at age 17, had made a reported $200 million by 1983. To settle an argument with fellow trader William Eckhardt about whether trading ability was innate or could be taught, he put an ad in the Wall Street Journal offering to teach candidates how to trade in two weeks, and then backed them with his own money. Of the thousands of people who who applied, 23 turtles were accepted. Their trading made $100 million for Dennis, leading some to become highly successful traders in their own right. Having tracked down most of the people involved, Covel describes the turtle training, including rules for entering and exiting trades as well as Dennis and Eckhardt's personal lessons, and speculates on why some turtles succeeded more than others. However, there are too many characters with competing interests, and many missing facts. Covel's own strong views can also get more emphasis than the voices of the principals. Still, the book is a useful training manual distilling the lessons of a fascinating experiment.

Getting Started in Options (Getting Started In.....)

http://i44.tinypic.com/t6xtzk.jpg

Anyone mystified by stock options or who simply dismisses them as too speculative will find Getting Started in Options an excellent first read on the subject. Beginning with the premise that it's not the complexity of the investment but that of its language that makes options difficult for new investors to understand, author Michael C. Thomsett has created a guided tour through the lexicon. The result is a nontechnical introduction to these specialized markets.

The book carefully and completely defines the terminology, explains options investing step by step, and presents strategies so that it is easy to understand at each level of risk involved. Choosing the right stock, buying and selling options, and combining techniques are all covered in increasing complexity, but this is a book for beginners, and those with basic knowledge of the subject will want to seek out more advanced reading.

Dictionary of E-business: A Definitive Guide to Technology and Business Terms

http://i41.tinypic.com/2qncnea.jpg

New technologies spawn neologisms at a frightening rate. New ways of working need new words to describe them and we need new words, with good definitions, to orientate ourselves more ably in IT's new spaces. A dictionary may not be the most obvious nor optimal tool for keeping up and getting on but books still have many advantages in our e-saturated world, not least in explaining that world back to us in formats, and through mediums, we are at ease with.

Francis Botto's Dictionary of E-Business is subtitled "a definitive guide to technology and business terms" a subtitle this accelerated world is, in reality, always going to make a mockery of: whatever is defined can be redefined and nothing degrades meaning more quickly than technology. That withstanding, Botto's dictionary is well presented, clear and timely and it makes a pretty good stab at living up to the promise on its cover. Definitions range from AAA server to Zoom options and include symbol definitions and good, pithy descriptions of key computer languages and their functions. It is easy to get lost in IT's language--Botto's book makes a good map!

Empire of Debt: The Rise of an Epic Financial Crisis

http://i42.tinypic.com/1z1wj5z.jpg

Many Americans have resisted the notion that their country is an imperial power. The idea seems to contradict the values of the Republic and its Founding Fathers. But in Empire of Debt, prominent financial analysts Bill Bonner and Addison Wiggin argue passionately that not only is the United States an empire, but it is also one whose end is coming soon. In Empire of Debt, a sequel to their earlier doom-and-gloom book Financial Reckoning Day, they elaborate on their argument that the U.S. economy is about to implode.

Bonner and Wiggin enumerate a long list of chronic ailments that imperil the American financial system--a massive trade deficit, soaring personal and government debt, a housing bubble, runaway military expenditures. These problems "hardly disturb the sleep of the imperial race," the authors write. "[But] all empires must pass away." Bonner and Wiggin argue that American imperial delusions are similar to the fantasies that fueled the dot-com market mania. They recommend readers buy gold as insurance in the event of a financial crisis. Empire of Debt flounders when discussing how America indebted itself; the authors blame the Federal Reserve Board's low interest rates but gloss over the fact that rates were slashed because the U.S. teetered on the brink of deflation in 2002 and 2003 (a topic they give more attention to in Financial Reckoning Day). As hardcore free-marketeers, Bonner and Wiggin also seem to long for the pre-welfare days of the 1920s but forget how that period's policies led to the Great Depression. That said, Empire of Debt contains many revelations that will open eyes.

Alan Shrugged: Alan Greenspan, the World's Most Powerful Banker

http://i42.tinypic.com/jqjdq1.jpg

As the book's title suggests, Alan Greenspan, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, is probably the world's most powerful financial figure. Tuccille, a financial writer and biographer (Rupert Murdoch; Trump), covers Greenspan's life from his 1926 birth through early 2002. He recounts Greenspan's close relationship with his mother after his parents' divorce, his two marriages, and his affinity for both mathematics and music. Although he played jazz professionally, Greenspan chose to follow his mathematical side and made a career in economics. After years in the private sector, he moved into government service as an advisor to presidents Nixon and Ford before President Reagan appointed him Federal Reserve Chairman in 1987, a job he has held ever since. Perhaps the most interesting details presented here are Greenspan's early involvement with Ayn Rand, his libertarian views on a limited government, and the flexibility he has maintained in his economic thought, which has allowed him to adjust to both differing market conditions and politicians. Tuccille's biography would be a useful addition to most academic and public libraries. For a more detailed look at Greenspan's years at the Fed, up to 2000, reader s should consider Bob Woodward's Maestro: Greenspan's Fed and the American Boom.

Profitable Patterns for Stock Trading

http://i44.tinypic.com/f1l11x.jpg

Over the past 20 years the use and misuse of the Fibonacci Summation series has proliferated to the point that commentators on the nation's TV business channels are now resident experts. I lay no claim to being an expert. I have, however, studied the subject of Fibonacci numbers extensively, especially how it relates to trading. I have always taken the pragmatic position that if I could not use what I was studying to help in trading, then I was not interested in pursuing it any further. If this material can stimulate your interest in the subject, then introducing you to the subject will have been worthwhile... The pattern recognition methodology illustrated in the text will be of interest to anyone that has ever traded using technical charts. I can say with confidence that there are very few who have researched patterns to the extent I have. Some of the references date back to the early 1900s. Each of these patterns is based on ratio and proportion. A technical ! chart is nothing more than a road map with a price and time axis. These patterns repeat with a great deal of regularity. Some of my best students have been airline pilots. They seem to approach trading like they approach flying, following a flight plan. The similarities to trading are numerous. Finally, one of my goals in writing this book is to expose you to the subject of ancient geometry. Fibonacci numbers are an integral part of the numbers that make up the subject of their origin in the cosmos. I will not spend a significant amount of time relating my experiences in astro-harmonics research. The subject is too vast for me to consider here. More importantly, it is not necessary for profitable trading.

Yellow Brick Road to Your Financial Security

http://i40.tinypic.com/96datz.jpg

'For a comfortable retirement you need three things: property, superannuation and your own portfolio of shares. Then there's the ultimate investment - your health. How to balance these is a lifelong journey requiring passion, courage and wisdom. It's the Yellow Brick Road to your financial security . . .'

In 2004, the founder and chairman of Wizard Home Loans, Mark Bouris, sold his stake to the world's largest corporation, GE. Overnight he became a wealthy man, but like many baby boomers, Bouris had no expertise in planning a retirement strategy. In his search for the best approach Bouris sought assistance from some of Australia's top investment experts.

The Yellow Brick Road to Your Financial Security explains what he learned in language we can all understand. Find out:
* what the experts know
* what the jargon means
* how to take charge of your retirement plans and why you need to start acting now
* how much you need for retirement and what your own risk profile looks like
* how to create a system to build your own investment portfolio
* why the ultimate investment - your own health and wellbeing - is the vital missing piece.

Serious Money, Straight Talk About Investing for Retirement

http://i43.tinypic.com/2rhwux2.jpg

SERIOUS MONEY is a down to earth investment book that is a must read for anyone saving for retirement.

Armed with extensive research and his own professional experience, Richard Ferri dismantles the illusion that stockbrokers, financial planners, and other Wall Street "experts" offer superior investment advice. Ferri finds that most of the investments sold in the mass market consist of high cost products that deliver below average returns. Ferri further explains how index funds and other low cost, low tax investments lead to greater wealth at retirement.

Serious Money is a thoughtful and thorough guidebook that cuts through the clutter and provides genuinely useful advice. It will save you time, money, and headaches.

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are a relatively new open-ended investment vehicle. Launched in 1993, their appeal as an important and unique financial product has compelled institutional and retail investors alike to look anew at what seems to be their endless possibilities. This has led to their dramatic expansion in terms of capital represented and numbers of funds.

Asset Price Bubbles: The Implications for Monetary, Regulatory, and International Policies

http://i42.tinypic.com/azgcxt.jpg

In both the industrialized and developing worlds, a distinctive feature of the last two decades has been prolonged buildups and sharp collapses in asset markets such as stock, housing, and exchange markets. The volatility has sparked intense debate in academic and policy circles over the appropriate monetary and regulatory response to dramatic market shifts.

This book examines asset price bubbles to further our understanding of the causes and implications of financial instability, focusing on the potential of central banks and regulatory agencies to prevent it. The book grew out of a conference jointly sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the World Bank Group in April 2002.

How to Write a Grant Proposal

http://i44.tinypic.com/2h3zt5y.jpg

Effective grant proposals are not so much written as they are extensively researched, developed, and positioned. The actual writing, obviously an essential component, is nevertheless only the tip of the iceberg. Grant seekers must possess the necessary skills to correctly identify potential funders, craft a proposal that meets a specific funder’s needs, and follow that funder’s directions to the letter. Cheryl New and James Quick take grant seekers step-by-step through the entire development and drafting process in How to Write a Grant Proposal.

The authors concentrate on all the behind-the-scenes, pre-writing work that makes the difference between successful grant proposals and those that potential funders discard as "nonresponsive." New and Quick concentrate on crafting specific proposals that prove a perfect match between a funder and a solicitor’s needs. Funders and the nonprofit organizations they support are both in the business of solving problems; the key is creating a project that addresses a problem that both parties are interested in solving. How to Write a Grant Proposal provides targeted guidance for a variety of kinds of organizations, including:

K—12 private and public educational organizations

Government agencies

For-profit businesses

Health care organizations

Traditional nonprofits

Higher education universities and centers

How to Write a Grant Proposal proves a one-stop resource on how to interpret a funder’s guidelines to create a successful grant proposal.

Stock Market Wizards: Interviews with America's Top Stock Traders

http://i44.tinypic.com/2i6ku40.jpg

Wall Street Meat: My Narrow Escape from the Stock Market Grinder

http://i44.tinypic.com/1584309.jpg

When Kessler interviewed for an analyst's position at Paine Webber in 1986, he wasn't even sure what the job entailed, but would soon learn there were "absolutely no qualifications whatsoever" for the responsibility of telling investors how to build their stock portfolios. He did happen to meet the right people, however: he palled around with Jack Grubman and then, at a subsequent job at Morgan Stanley, worked with Frank Quattrone and Mary Meeker-three analysts who later acquired varying levels of fame and notoriety during the boom-and-bust market of the late 1990s, as they were accused of deliberately recommending stocks from tech companies they knew to be overvalued. Henry Blodget was also implicated in the ensuing scandal, but despite his prominence on the cover, he has no substantial presence in this story, just a few cameos well after Kessler left Wall Street to run an investment firm in California. The subtitular implication that Wall Street "chewed up" these figures is also misleading; the men were at the top of their game when they were forced out, while Meeker has at this writing suffered nothing more than slight damage to her reputation. Kessler's denigration of her as a "clueless" rookie who became a technology "cheerleader" risks overstating the case against her as a means of pumping up the reputation of otherwise "pure analysts." False modesty and clunky dialogue do little to enhance a story that relies too heavily on Kessler's former proximity to now-famous people, while his analysis of their legal woes rarely advances beyond the superficial. Readers seeking insight into the blurring of the boundaries between investment bankers and stock analysts should wait for a book that tells that story directly, with a fuller perspective.

Financial Analysis and Decision Making : Tools and Techniques to Solve Financial Problems and Make Effective Business Decisions

http://i27.tinypic.com/r1jrqg.jpg

How can you use your company's assets more productively?

Are you at risk of running out of cash?

Good questions. Financial Analysis and Decision Making shows you how to use the tools of financial analysis to arrive at answers that are both easy to grasp and based on reality, not CPA-speak.

This uniquely accessible book emphasizes the impact of accounting information on strategic business decisions, and explains how financial and nonfinancial professionals can use that information to solve a variety of business questions and problems. Plain-English descriptions, sample problems, real-world case studies, and more show you how to:

Trading Rules that Work: The 28 Lessons Every Trader Must Master

http://i30.tinypic.com/2z82m9v.jpg

As traders, virtually all of us develop a set of rules that govern our trading activities. Yet, all too often—for a variety of reasons—many of us selectively ignore or change those rules.

Author Jason Alan Jankovsky has been a trader and market analyst for over twenty years. During this time the markets have taught him many things, but the most valuable lesson learned was the importance of following a set of trading rules that work for your style of trading, risk tolerance, and emotional make-up. Now, in Trading Rules that Work, Jankovsky wants to share his findings with you.

This comprehensive guide provides a blueprint for trading success by introducing you to 28 essential rules that can be shaped to fit any trading approach—whether you're dealing in stocks, commodities, or currencies. Straightforward and accessible, Trading Rules that Work outlines the deeper psychology behind each of these accepted trading rules and provides you with a better understanding of how to make those rules work for you. The rules, which are more accurately defined as flexible guidelines, fall under four parts within the book:

* Part One: Getting in the Game outlines the psychology of market price action, what that can mean as far as your trade selection is concerned, and how to begin from the point of a strong market presence
* Part Two: Cutting Losses shows you how to protect yourself in today's markets—even when it is emotionally difficult to do so—by developing a set of personal trading rules uniquely designed to your trading style
* Part Three: Letting Profits Run covers the few simple rules you should follow in order to remain in a winning trade until market potential has run out
* Part Four: Trader Maxims examines the most common rules, and how they have both nega-tive and positive psychological implications

Trading successfully takes discipline, desire, knowledge, and skill. By combining the various rules, insights, and guidelines found through-out this book, you'll be in the best position possible to achieve consistent success—no matter what markets you choose to trade.

Working the Street: What You Need to Know About Life on Wall Street

http://i27.tinypic.com/nobper.jpg

Written by a former Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, Working the Street is the resource for readers hoping to build a successful career on Wall Street. It is not a "how-to" career book or a job guide. It doesn't tell the reader who to contact for a job or what classes to take to prepare for a career in banking, and it is not a book about the technical "nuts and bolts" of Wall Street. What this book does tell the reader is about some of the "ins and outs" of Wall Street; about how things really work in the banking world; about some of the speed bumps to watch out for and some of the "low hanging fruit" that is ripe for the picking, from getting in the door and developing positive habits, to getting a bonus and handling retirement. In order to really succeed, it is necessary to know as much as possible about how Wall Street really works. Working the Street goes a long way in providing exactly that.

Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco

http://i29.tinypic.com/24b9386.jpg

Barbarians at the Gate is a classic of the business book genre, and with the private equity boom we have seen in the last couple of years, it is still as relevant as it was when it came twenty years ago. It is the story or some extremely unlikable rich people brought low by equally unsavory, but much smarter rich people, and it gives you an inside feel for the major wall street deal like no other book can.

Barbarians at the Gate is the story of an attempt to take RJR Nabisco private, and then the series of take over attempts that were instigated by the original privatization plan. Johnson, the CEO of RJR, comes off as pompous, full of himself, and not very smart. He's like a frat boy who makes it by glad handing people and buying rounds of drinks. Kravis, of legendary private equity firm KKR, comes off like a financier god. Brilliant, pushy, and beyond your puny human morals. Guess who gets the company in the end.

A must read for anyone interested in modern Wall Street.

Wall Street: A History : From Its Beginnings to the Fall of Enron

http://i30.tinypic.com/2ng6jwk.jpg

In the seven years since the publication of the first edition of Wall Street, America's financial industry has undergone a series of wrenching events that have dramatically changed the nation's economic landscape. The bull market of the 1990's came to a close, ushering in the end of the dot com boom, a record number of mergers occurred, and accounting scandals in companies like Enron and WorldCom shook the financial industry to its core. In this wide-ranging volume, financial historian Charles Geisst provides the first history of Wall Street, explaining how a small, concentrated pocket of lower Manhattan came to have such enormous influence in national and world affairs. In this updated edition, Geisst sums up the recent turbulence that has threatened America's financial industry. He shows how in 1997 thirty NASDAQ market makers paid a record $1.3 billion fine for price irregularities in stocks. He makes sense of the closing of the bull market, and explains a major change in the accounting rules for mergers that caused monumental losses for companies like AOL Time Warner. And he recounts how in the aftermath of the speculative fever that swept Wall Street in the 1990's, the scandals at Enron, Tyco, Worldcom, and Conseco represent a last gasp of mergermania and a fallout from a bubble-like market. Wall Street is at once the story of the street itself, from the days when the wall was merely a defensive barricade built by Peter Stuyvesant, to the modern billion-dollar computer-driven colossus of today. In a broader sense it is an engaging economic history of the United States, the role Wall Street played in making America the most powerful economy in the world, and the many challenges to that role it has faced in recent years.

The 5 Keys to Value Investing

http://i25.tinypic.com/nbxbvp.jpg

How to determine what stocks are really worth** and buy the best at a discount

"The Five Keys to Value Investing is practical, insightful, and a great roadmap to not only value investing but how to make money in the stock market." -- Joel Greenblatt, Managing Partner, Gotham Capital

"Jean-Jacques has written a great how-to guide for both beginning and experienced value investors. He skillfully draws on the canon and legacy of the great value investors, such as Graham and Buffett…a terrific addition on this time-tested methodology." -- Eric T. McKissack, Vice Chairman, Ariel Capital Management/Ariel Mutual Funds

Investors left to pick up the pieces of the shattered stock market are rediscovering value investing** the time-tested technique based on assessing and buying businesses as opposed to "picking" hot stocks. The Five Keys to Value Investing provides a methodical framework for using value analysis to uncover investment opportunities based on their business strengths, and building a solid portfolio of stocks that is destined to provide superior long-term returns.

Written by a professional value investor who worked for the best, The Five Keys to Value Investing explains how to answer the four basic questions of value investing:

* Does this stock represent a good business to own?
* What is its balance between price and value?
* What specific events will spur it to appreciate?
* What are the stock's safety levels?

Epistemological Problems of Economics

http://i30.tinypic.com/wm0a6f.jpg

"The characteristic feature of this age of destructive wars and social disintegration is the revolt against economics." So says Ludwig von Mises in his most thorough defense of the method and scope of economic science. In this treatise, he argues that the core intellectual errors of statism, socialism, protectionism, racism, irrationalism can be found in a revolt against economic logic and its special character.

Epistemological Problems of Economics was original published in 1933, a period when the social sciences and economic policy were undergoing upheaval. The classical view of economics as a deductive science, along with the laissez-faire policies implied by that view, were being displaced by positivism and economic planning. Mises set out to put the classical view on a firmer foundation. In so doing, he examines a range of philosophical problems associated with economics. He goes further to delineate the scope of the general science of human action.

This treatise, out of print for many years, is now brought back by the Mises Institute in a 3rd edition, with a comprehensive introduction by Jörg Guido Hülsmann, senior fellow of the Mises Institute. He observes that "the great majority of contemporary economists, sociologists, political scientists, and philosophers are either completely unaware of Mises's contributions to the epistemology of the social sciences or think they can safely neglect dealing with them. They are in error. One can ignore a thinker, but the fundamental problems of social analysis remain. There will be no progress in these disciplines before the mainstream has fully absorbed and digested Mises's ideas."

Bull: A History of the Boom and Bust, 1982-2004

http://i29.tinypic.com/2s6uj46.jpg

Financial journalist Mahar offers a thorough and accessible history of the explosive 1982-1999 bull market that is illuminating as well as sobering from the current bear market perspective. She notes that most people swept up in the euphoria of this latest market surge failed to recall the lessons of 1929-1934 and 1970-1974, when earlier bubbles collapsed and investors lost heavily. Citing studies by esteemed economists John Kenneth Galbraith and Charles Kindleberger, Mahar reminds readers that this self-blinding euphoria is a regular feature of every bull market. In vivid detail, she documents the trends and outsized personalities that fueled this particular bull market, including the surge of leveraged buyouts of 1984-1987, the mania for junk bonds, falling short-term interest rates, the rush of individual investors into 401(k) retirement plans, the power (and appetites) of mutual funds and the media frenzy that lent an unlikely allure to quarterly corporate earnings reports. As the runup in stock prices gained momentum in the late 1990s while evidence of corporate accounting shenanigans mounted, Mahar's account assumes the compelling power of an oncoming train wreck. Survivors of the recent market meltdown can profit from Mahar's assertion: "Ultimately, secular bear markets teach investors to learn to manage risk in a different way, focusing not on the odds, but on the size of risk." Individual investors will also gather that they need to be more skeptical of some sources of "information" and to be much better informed not to be burned again.

The Ultimate Trading Guide

http://i29.tinypic.com/2aguk2x.jpg

With the recent explosion in the popularity of trading, nearly everyone who trades wants a trading system–a methodology for buying and selling. A trading system can be a useful tool–provided the trader has the know-how to use it correctly. Unfortunately, few traders do. In this indispensable book, John Hill, one of today’s most highly regarded analysts, and his partners, George Pruitt and Lundy Hill, enable traders to develop original systems that they can use to increase their trading profitability.

Demonstrating that a system is only as reliable as the criteria on which it is based and the information that is fed into it, the authors provide traders with the tools needed to develop systems based on sound logic, including complete explanations of:

* The principles behind trading systems
* How various systems operate for
* accounts of all sizes, ranging from
* amounts of $10,000 to $1,000,000
* The tools and background necessary for developing computerized trading systems that are backtested (i.e., tested on existing historical data) and will be profitable in the future
* Short-term market timing techniques for any market

...and much more. Stock, futures and options traders, and individual investors will find that this complete, highly effective tutorial is truly the ultimate in successfully developing and utilizing trading systems that really work.

In Trade Like Jesse Livermore, author Richard Smitten explores the technical aspects of Livermore’s trading approach and shows readers how they can use these techniques to garner the success Livermore once did. Trade Like Jesse Livermore covers every aspect of Livermore’s trading methods, from discerning market behavior and trends such as top-down and tandem trading to paying close attention to indicators such as one-day reversals and spikes. With this book as their guide, readers can learn how to trade profitably without fear or greed.

Bond and Money Markets: Strategy, Trading, Analysis

This is a truly impressive work and a great reference. Even market experts will find something of value here, it takes the reader from first principles to some very complex subjects, all explained in very acccessible fashion. Every topic connected with the debt capital markets is covered, ranging from bonds, interest-rate derivatives, money markets, credit derivatives, yield curve analysis, structured products, CDOs, everything. It is also very well written, like having your own private tutor and market expert delivering a lecture on the markets. It is well worth the money I paid for it, and I recommend it to anyone who needs to know about bonds, derivatives and market analysis. This book is streets ahead of all the competition, no author I have come across, in over 20 years of experience in the markets, comes close to writing like Choudhry does.

Capitalism: A Treatise on Economics

http://i31.tinypic.com/2628nm1.jpg

Reisman's ringing manifesto for laissez-faire capitalism free of all government intervention is at once a conservative polemic and a monumental treatise, brimming with original theories. that is remarkable for its depth, scope and rigorous argument. He rejects the Keynesian doctrine that government must adopt a policy of budget deficits to cope with unemployment, contending, to the contrary, that federal intervention in the economic system is a root cause of inflation, credit expansion, depression and mass unemployment. Reisman staunchly defends capitalists as risk-takers who raise the average worker's real wages and living standards, increasing productivity and improving the quantity and quality of goods. Socialism, he says, is the system that exploits labor and causes stifling monopolistic control. Professor of economics at L.A.'s Pepperdine University, Reisman frequently espouses unfashionable, some would say "extreme," views; for instance, he opposes mandatory recycling, defends insider trading of stocks as justifiable and beneficial and condemns laws banning child labor as an "inappropriate" response to a social ill. His call for a pro-capitalist political movement dedicated to the abolition of the welfare state, elimination of Social Security and Medicare, dismantling of public education, private ownership of all land, abolition of personal and corporate income taxes and a 90% cutback in government spending seems to put this tome beyond the pale of mainstream political debate?although it does come with advance raves from two Nobel laureates in economics.

It brings together the patterns found in many diverse charting methods and adds the valuable dimension of performance statistics, trading tactics, and behavioral characteristics of each pattern. It is a valuable contribution to existing literature on charting and should be considered an indispensable reference by any serious chart trader." —Edward D. Dobson President, Traders Press, Inc. Fractal Market Analysis Applying Chaos Theory to Investment and Economics

http://i37.tinypic.com/2dtylpu.jpg

The average investor is usually unaware of the theoretical bases and academic underpinnings of various investment strategies. Investment books and popular reference guides barely mention efficient market or random walk theory, and the mathematical aspect of portfolio management theory appears as little more than a footnote. Little actually new has been added to the field of investment and market theory for the last 30 years, but recently Peters introduced the landmark Chaos and Order in the Capital Markets (1991). Chaos theory is a branch of mathematics that, despite its name, attempts to make order out of seemingly random events and that has found application in the natural sciences. Market chaologists, as they have come to be known, have marshaled an array of formulas and computer models but have been criticized for not being able to explain their ideas in practical terms or to demonstrate how to apply these ideas. Fractals are the main mathematical tool of chaos theory, and Peters now shows how these can be applied to financial markets and trading. This book is unquestionably complex and relatively expensive, but all libraries with investment collections should consider purchasing at least one copy

Multiple Streams of Internet Income

http://i38.tinypic.com/352g8br.jpg

Allen (Nothing Down: How To Buy Real Estate with Little or No Money Down; Multiple Streams of Income) has now moved on to espouse the web as the path to more wealth and personal freedom. The first third of the volume is simply hype. The middle third reviews marketing fundamentals as applied to the net material that one might find in any marketing text. The remainder devotes individual chapters to methods for making money on the Internet such as niche marketing, auto responders, selling links, placing ads on your web page, net auctions, and affiliations with companies who want access to your clients. Allen freely uses other individuals to explain concepts and, unlike many authors of this genre, gives them credit. The volume also has a reputable publisher, an author with a proven record of popularity, arguably less hyperbole than most, and a focus on marketing basics. Despite the ongoing shake-out in the high-tech arena, there is always an audience for get-rich-quick schemes, and Allen's latest title is a cut above the rest of the Tony Robbins or Dave Del Dotto ilk. An acceptable public library purchase

Inflation-indexed Securities: Bonds, Swaps and Other Derivatives

http://i34.tinypic.com/8vrckj.jpg

The global market for inflation–indexed securities has ballooned in recent years, and this trend is set to continue. This book examines the rationale behind issuance and investment decisions, and details the issues facing anyone who designs indexed securities, illustrating them wherever possible with actual examples from the international capital markets. In particular, an extensive review of indexed debt markets throughout the world is provided – including for the first time, a comprehensive and consistent set of cash flow and price–yield equations for the instruments already in existence in the major bond markets – forming an important reference for those already experienced in the field, as well as practitioners and academics approaching the subject for the first time.

The book also provides unique insight into the development of inflation–indexed derivative products, and the analytical tools required to value such instruments.

Fundamentals of Investments: Valuation and Management

http://i33.tinypic.com/2llc028.jpg

The target market for this text is an introductory undergraduate course in which students have relatively little familiarity with investments and would like a practical and applied type of text. The approach of this undergraduate investments text reflects two central ideas:

1. A consistent focus on the student as an individual investor or investment advisor.

2. A consistent, unified treatment of the four basic types of financial instruments stocks, bonds, options, and futures focusing on their characteristics and features, their risks and returns, and the markets in which they trade.

The focus on the student as the audience paired with Brad Jordans conversational writing style makes this a very relevant and understandable text. This text is a great complement to trading simulations, especially Stock-Trak, by covering the basic material early enough to begin trading in the first two weeks of the course.

Probability and Finance: It's Only a Game!

http://i38.tinypic.com/r86p28.jpg

Glenn Shafer wrote a very thought provoking book on the mathematical theory of evidence many years ago. Vladimir Vovk was a student of Kolmogorov. At first I thought this would be a book that tries to replace the measure theoretic approach to probability with a game theory (gambling) approach and I was skeptical about it being successful. But these authors are serious and first rate probabilists who understand the theory, foundations and history of probability from all the angles.

The authors sell the book as two books. The first half presents probability theory and the classic probability results in the framework of a game between two opponents that they call Skeptic and the World. If we replaced Skeptic by Investor and World by Market we see it naturally as an investment problem in finance. They see their methodology as natural for a course in the probabilist approach to financial problems. The special topics in finance and important models such as Black-Scholes is then the subject of the second part of the book.

Preparing for the Worst: Incorporating Downside Risk in Stock Market Investments

http://i34.tinypic.com/n2h83s.jpg

A timely approach to downside risk and its role in stock market investments

When dealing with the topic of risk analysis, most books on investments treat downside and upside risk equally. Preparing for the Worst takes an entirely novel approach by focusing on downside risk and explaining how to incorporate it into investment decisions. Highlighting this asymmetry of the stock market, the authors describe how existing theories miss the downside and follow with explanations of how it can be included. Various techniques for calculating downside risk are demonstrated.

This book presents the latest ideas in the field from the ground up, making the discussion accessible to mathematicians and statisticians interested in applications in finance, as well as to finance professionals who may not have a mathematical background. An invaluable resource for anyone wishing to explore the critical issues of finance, portfolio management, and securities pricing, this book:

* Incorporates Value at Risk into the theoretical discussion
* Uses many examples to illustrate downside risk in U.S., international, and emerging market investments
* Addresses downside risk arising from fraud and corruption
* Includes step-by-step instructions on how to implement the methods introduced in this book
* Offers advice on how to avoid pitfalls in calculations and computer programming
* Provides software use information and tips

Essentials of Investments

http://i34.tinypic.com/6qz43o.jpg

The market leading Essentials of Investments, 5/e by Bodie, Kane and Marcus is an undergraduate textbook on investment analysis, presenting the practical applications of investment theory to convey insights of practical value. The authors have eliminated unnecessary mathematical detail and concentrate on the intuition and insights that will be useful to practitioners throughout their careers as new ideas and challenges emerge from the financial marketplace. ESSENTIALS maintains the theme of asset allocation (authors discuss asset pricing and trading then apply these theories to portfolio planning in real-world securities markets that are governed by risk/return relationships). ESSENTIALS continues to develop modern topics. The major objective in this revision is to maintain the current level in content and coverage, with greater emphasis on the Internet and global issues, and to improve the text's accessibility by enhancing presentation, pedagogy, and design.

Bodie/Kane/Marcus is the leading textbook in the graduate investments market. It is recognized as the best blend of practical and theoretical coverage, while maintaining an appropriate rigor and clear writing style. Its unifying theme is that security markets are nearly efficient, meaning that most securities are usually priced appropriately given their risk and return attributes. The text places greater emphasis on asset allocation, and offers a much broader and deeper treatment of futures, options, and other derivative security markets than most investment texts.

The Compleat Day Trader: Trading Systems, Strategies, Timing Indicators and Analytical Methods

http://i34.tinypic.com/1427w2a.jpg

The emergence of the Internet along with the increased volatility of the financial markets have combined to fuel an explosive growth in the interest and practice of day trading. So it should surprise no one that there's a parallel explosion in the number of books about day trading. Jake Bernstein, who has been involved in the futures industry as an author and trader for some 30 years, adds The Compleat Day Trader to this cadre. It offers a solid introduction to day trading and evaluates various techniques and strategies, including moving averages, intraday application of stochastics, support and resistance, gaps, and scalping. Bernstein spends several chapters discussing trading psychology, and he sees successful traders as developing a balance between technique and "art." He writes:

My experiences as a trader have led me to the conclusion that successful day trading is built upon a unique foundation combining art and science. If pressed to "guesstimate" as to the proper mix of both qualities, I'd say that approximately 70 percent of successful day trading consists of technique or science and 30 percent skill and/or art. This, however, would be a misleading statement inasmuch as both elements are symbiotic; without one, the other would be ineffective. The successful day trader combines both elements synergistically to produce profits, consistency and longevity.

As he does in the sequel to this book, The Compleat Day Trader II, Bernstein shows an obvious preference to futures trading, but many of the techniques described should apply to other markets as well.

The Compleat Day Trader II

http://i33.tinypic.com/24njr6x.jpg

The Compleat Day Trader II builds on the ideas presented in Bernstein's first day-trading book, The Compleat Day Trader. This time around, Bernstein focuses on more advanced trading systems and places particular emphasis on the importance of self-discipline in day trading, and he zeros in on the best futures markets to trade, including the S&P 500, Treasury bonds, and European currencies. He peppers the book with cautions about the difficulties of day trading, saying, for example:

The bad news is that it's getting harder and harder to win as the markets become more competitive and as insiders grab onto opportunities before the general public has had a chance to do so. Fortunately, the basic rules of profitable futures trading still apply. Therefore, if you follow the rules, you will improve your odds of success, even though they may be less than they would have been 15 years ago.

The lure of making a living--if not a fortune--on the daily ups and downs of the stock and commodity markets has drawn thousands into this high-stakes game. Just how many profitable day traders there are is impossible to gauge, but judging from message boards and articles in the financial press, it's a safe bet that lots of people lose lots of money. Reading both The Compleat Day Trader and The Compleat Day Trader II should you bring you to the conclusion that while profitable day trading is possible, it requires more than just a passing interest. Proceed with caution.

A Guide to Business Continuity Planning

http://i34.tinypic.com/2e54fw1.jpg

The need for business continuity planning has been highlighted recently by the continuing rapid increase in the dependency of business on technology and the series of headline-grabbing, thought-provoking disasters witnessed in recent years, caused by and including power failures, fuel shortages, storms and floods.

As these disasters occupy prominent coverage by the news media, the senior management of virtually every company and governmental entity needs to consider and plan for the prospect of a disaster interrupting their operations.

Yet the cause of the disaster condition is more often a localized occurrence which can have a deceptively great impact on a company or organization. It is these more common occurrences which happen to an individual company rather than an entire area, that activate companies to plan beyond the point of "what if" to a more proactive "how can we prepare for this type of thing happening again" approach.

This practical and highly topical book:

* provides the "how-to" of planning and implementing recovery policies in case of disaster or emergency
* is an invaluable "toolkit" for CEOs, and managers who find themselves in the role of internal consultant on corporate business continuity planning
* offers the same kind of guidance as an external specialist
* will also be a valuable source of reference for business consultants in the field

Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy

http://i33.tinypic.com/53wt9f.jpg

A well-known conservative columnist, author and economist, Sowell (A Personal Odyssey, etc.) presents an introductory course in economics with an emphasis on public policy. Forgoing jargon, equations, graphs and complicated exposition, he's produced a book that's easy to read and understand, though it tends to be superficial and is written in an angry tone, often accusing others of economic ignorance, as if that is the only possible explanation for disagreement with the author's views. Sowell is at his best discussing microeconomics in the first two-thirds of the book. Unlike most accounts, which cover the subject from the point of view of business or investment, Sowell concentrates on government action, in an effort to prepare the reader for civic participation. He addresses price controls and subsidies in detail, both as important political issues in their own right and to demonstrate how prices work by showing what happens when they are constrained. In the final third of the book, he wades into more complex and controversial territory--macroeconomics, international economics and popular fallacies--and his effort to cover them at the elementary level results in a muddled treatment. Overall, his defense of certain conservative tenets is wielded with a sledgehammer rather than a rapier. Agent, Carol Mann. (Feb. 15)Forecast: Sowell's many fans will appreciate this book (which is supported by a radio satellite tour), though it is probably most appropriate as a gift to junior high school relatives, accompanied by a bribe to read it. General readers can--and some of them will--find better written, more sophisticated introductions to economics, including such middle-of-the-road overviews as From Here to Economy: A Short Cut to Economic Literacy by Todd G. Buchholz or New Ideas from Dead Economists: An Introduction to Modern Economic Thought by Todd G. Buchholz and Martin Feldstein. For a conservative viewpoint, Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedman has yet to be topped.

An updated approach to classic security analysis
The principles of value investing outlined by Graham and Dodd in the 1940s continues to be used today by individuals and companies who face challenging investment decisions. A Modern Approach to Graham and Dodd Investing examines the classic Graham and Dodd approach to valuation and updates it for the twenty-first century. Thomas Au, a credentialed analyst with a leading insurance company and an ex-Value Line analyst, reworks the basics of value investing from net present value, financial statement analysis, and return on capital to return and leverage, asset allocation, and diversification. Through case studies and real-time analysis, A Modern Approach to Graham and Dodd Investing presents readers with examples that will make analysis and portfolio theory more relevant and powerful.

Financial valuation is a field rich in theory and divergent points of view, though often lacking in real-world applications and professional consensus. Nationally recognized valuation authority James Hitchner fills in the gap by assembling twenty-five leading valuation experts who analyze, explain, and concur on the most effective valuation procedures in Financial Valuation: Applications and Models.

This seminal text contains numerous examples and methods that will assist the reader in navigating a valuation project, along with hundreds of short, easily understandable "ValTips" highlighting important and often controversial issues. Financial Valuation covers basic, intermediate, and advanced topics, such as:

* Shareholder disputes
* Mergers and acquisitions
* Income, estate, and gift tax
* Marital dissolution
* ESOPs
* Financial reporting

The twenty-five authors hail from a variety of professional specializations, including accounting, business appraisal, and financial analysis. Each chapter summarizes its function’s best practices, illustrating the appropriate and defensible way to prepare a business valuation.

A New Financial Market Structure for East Asia: Process And Outcomes in Infrastructure Industries

http://i36.tinypic.com/2j1q1kz.jpg

This book contends that the East Asian financial constitution lacks an appropriate infrastructure, resulting in inefficient allocation of high savings and an over-inflated short-term debt market. It goes on to point out that despite high savings, East Asia’s dependency on financial centers outside the region is also relatively high, and that there is no strong region-wide network to connect various financial centers in East Asia.

Against this economic background, the contributors make recommendations for the establishment of effective and stable capital recycling in East Asia. The financial intermediary function of the regional financial centers - Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo - is evaluated. Discussion focuses on the issues of building an organic network between the financial markets of major economies in the region and enhancing the future role and function of those regional financial centers. The policy implications of the future development of regional financial markets - based on regional financial networks - that could potentially act as intermediaries between the high savings and productive sectors in East Asia are also examined.

Concentrating on the major issues identified as central to building a new financial market structure in East Asia, this book will be appeal to those with a special interest in Asian studies and financial economics.

Monetary Theory and Policy

http://i38.tinypic.com/awqf68.jpg

Monetary Theory and Policy presents an advanced treatment of critical topics in monetary economics and the models economists use to investigate the interactions between real and monetary factors. It provides extensive coverage of general equilibrium models of money, models of the short-run real effects of monetary policy, and game-theoretic approaches to monetary policy. Among the topics covered are money-in-the-utility-function models, cash-in-advance models, money and public finance, the credit channel of money, models of time consistency, monetary policy operating procedures, and interest rates and monetary policy. The book uses dynamic simulations to evaluate quantitatively the significance of the channels through which monetary policy and inflation affect the economy. It extensively examines modern approaches to monetary policy that stress the incentives facing central banks and the strategic interactions between central banks and the private sector. Where most treatments of monetary policy emphasize money supply control and money demand, this book focuses on the implications of interest rate control for monetary policy. The book is designed for advanced graduate students in monetary economics, economic researchers, and economists working in policy institutions and central banks. This second edition includes new discussions of empirical evidence on the interest elasticity of money demand, the fiscal theory of the price level, the new Keynesian model, optimal policies in forward-looking models, stability and the Taylor principle, and open economy new Keynesian models. It also expands its coverage of multiple equilibria, the role of timing assumptions in cash-in-advance models, and the Ramsey approach to optimal monetary taxation. A new chapter treats policy analysis in new Keynesisan models; the discussion includes the derivation of the policy objective function, optimal commitment and discretionary outcome, targeting rules, and instrument rules.

International Economics: Theory and Policy

http://i33.tinypic.com/33osikj.jpg

International Economics, the best-selling textbook in the field, is written by two of the world's preeminent economists. Both the real trade portion of the book and the monetary portion are divided into a core of chapters focused on theory, followed by chapters applying the theory to major policy questions, past and current. The Sixth Edition has been throughly revised to reflect the changes of today's global economic landscape, including the unprecedented expansion of globalization, the increasingly crucial nature of international economic relations, the gains from trade, and recent anti-globalization controversies such as the continuing debate over the optimal level of trade. Consistent with previous editions, the text presents an integrated treatment of the Ricardian model, specific factors, factor endowments, and imperfect competition models of trade, along with in-depth analysis of empirical evidence. It covers the effects and causes of trade policy, including strategic trade policy and the income-distribution effects of trade. The book also provides a unified model of open-economy macroeconomics, based on an asset-market approach to exchange rate determination with a central role for expectations.

Campaign Trading: Tactics and Strategies to Exploit the Markets

http://i38.tinypic.com/e5iq9u.jpg

Trading systems are the strategies all technical traders use to place their trades. However, any given system is only effective for a certain amount of time, under a specific set of circumstances. Therefore, to be truly successful, traders must change their systems on a regular basis. This text discusses the impermanence and built-in obsolescence of trading systems. The author explains, using a case example, how to create a profitable trading campaign that will work for a specific financial instrument under certain circumstances for a limited period of time. Then, the system is redeveloped for the next set of circumstances. The overall aim is that the campaign never becomes obsolete as the program is constantly adjusted to meet market changes.

100 Minds That Made the Market

http://i34.tinypic.com/oa0s3b.jpg

Fisher (Wall Street Waltz, Contemporary Bks., 1987), the author of the "Portfolio Strategy" column in Forbes magazine, here presents a collection of brief (three- to four-page) biographies of individuals who made notable contributions to American finance. Fisher's list of 100 embraces both the successes and the failures, with Chapter 7 devoted to "Crooks, Scandals, and Scalawags." Fisher opted to include only deceased figures, and all but a handful are Americans. Many of them (e.g., Vanderbilt, Morgan, Gould) will be familiar to all readers; others (such as Evangeline Adams, a fortune-teller who made market predictions for rich and famous clients) are less prominent but more entertaining to read about. This informative book achieves its stated purpose of being "fun." Recommended for libraries with large popular business collections; less suitable for reference purposes.

Beyond Economic Growth: An Introduction to Sustainable Development.

http://i38.tinypic.com/20zb1p0.jpg

What is development? And what does it take to make development sustainable? How can we measure and compare levels of development for different countries? The author of Beyond Economic Growth challenges readers to find their own answers to these complex questions by analyzing and synthesizing information on a range of critical and interrelated development issues: population growth, economic growth, equity, poverty, hunger, education, health, industrialization, privatization, trade, foreign investment, international aid, climate change, the Millennium Development Goals, and more.

Why is world population growing faster than ever before?
Will poor country economies catch up with the rich?
Can poor countries break the vicious circle of poverty and hunger?
How does a country’s economic position affect its education needs?
How are health risks changing in different parts of the world?
Will the North-South cooperation help prevent global climate change?
How does government corruption influence national development?

The book, which draws on recent World Bank data, is written for young people, teachers, students, and others interested in learning more about global development.

This completely revised and expanded second edition of Beyond Economic Growth includes new sections on:

global hunger
HIV/AIDS
