I use f-prot
I like how easy it is to use, and how it will tell you where a file is at when realtime scanner finds it, and they real file name not a diff name that other programs use.

IMO, the two best Antivirus programs would be Kaspersky and NOD32. Kaspersky slightly edges out NOD32 in terms of detection rates. However, NOD32 has leet scan times. It whizzes through files but still manages to maintain a 95% detection rate and extremely fast. The advanced heuristics detects trojans that other AV can't detect. Usually new undefined trojans are caught as well.

Norton Antivirus? It's slow but eh. I got rid of it. Cuz it messed with programs getting internet. I don't know. I would try the NOD32 if I were you.

when I had norton it got infected with more crap than anything. The norton system files were all infected. I scanned it w/ 2 different antiviruses and 4 different spyware scanners. Its far from the best :P
I'll give nod32 a try thanks alex

I'm giving NOD a try right now. I've been using Kaspersky; it DOES catch a lot. Norton wouldn't let me load Office. It used to be good a few years ago, but got all screwed up.

let me ask you, i want to try kaspersky. does it use as much resources as norton or almost as much? also, i'm testing nod32, which firewall should i install that would be the best and use the least amount of resources.

The best antivirus programs are still MCAfee and Norton but both programs are big and use a lot of the cpu and thus making your system slow. Furthermore you need a startupdisabler to stop some functions that don't need to be active on startup only on demand. Another problem of Norton is that it can disable your internetconnection if you have the liveupdate enabled.
Other less demanding antivirus programs are Nod32, kaspersky and AVG
wich do almost the same as McAfee and Norton with less CPU use and are more friendly to use.
I would pick Nod32, it works great and add an extra spywarescanner like spyemergency to do fast spywarescanning on your system, because most virusscanners are pretty slow in handling spyware.

A newsletter called Dave's Computer Newsletter, has just finished a pretty exhaustive study on Spyware offerings on the market and you way wish to consult it before committing to any one specific brand for your system.
h**p://w*w.davescomputertips.com/Newsletters/20070101.php#2
In the mean time, I would strongly urge you to NOT pay a penny for such a utility and go for a FREEware utility.
Please, also use extreme care in which one you use as some of the crappy anti-spyware are actually spyware themselves and report home.
Also, it is strongly advised to NEVER EVER install any security software that is made by NORTON/Symantec in your system. This suggestion equally holds true for MacAffee programs. Just because they are the most used ones on the market does not mean that they are even close to being good. Norton/Symantec maybe great at marketting but {IMHO} they are very hi-maintenance for something that should not be a yearly subscription based software!
.... 'nuff said!
AVG is a very good and efficient one, however NOD32 would be the most lightweight.

Norton is the best antivirus to keep virus's and trojans out of your garbage can ;)
Nod32 is the fastest/smalles/best antivirus that uses the least resources... also it doesn't require scanning, it scans as it goes and monitors your log files :)

NOD32! NOD32! NOD32! NOD32! Its that simple ive used Kapersky and didnt find it as good in the slightest, Eset are due to release version 3 of NOD32 (there is a beta version currently available) and they are supposed to be doing a full security suite complete with firewall (which is going to be if their current standards are owt to go by) a mate of mine is a NOD32 agent so gets regular updates about what they are doing at Eset, so I will keep you all posted.
AVG is lousy too (ive tried more or less most of em, the more popular ones anyway) compared to NOD32. So download it and get protected.

Use any of the well know antiviruses, and then on top of it use Malwarebytes. It picks up the rest of the viruses that the big ones dont

what antivirus program is the best?
For free Antivirus solutions try Avira AntiVir Personal, avast! 4.8 Home Edition or AVG Free
I've tryied all of the above for many years, AVG is horrible, can crash, it has update problems and it's healing option it's there just for "decoration". I loved avast! and was using it daily until one day a virus struck my pc that terminated avast! imediately and lost all the data on my hard drive.
Since then i'm using Avira AntiVir Personal and i have no problems, it has the best detection of these 3, only thing with it is that it will only update automatically once/day as for manual update you can update it as many times as you like, but auto just once/day.
try it!
http://www.free-av.com/
PS
It has a firewall two, something that avast! lacks at, and AVGs firewall is unreliable.
PPS
All 3 are lightweight on system resources, especially avast! and Avira.
If you're searching for a comercial solution then NOD32/Smart Security cmight be for you, light on resources and never disepointed me before (only swaped on Avira because of legal problems)
You can buy NOD32 from the official site:
http://www.eset.com/
Or steal it off the internet if you don't have legal doughts about using a pirated AV.
NOD32 is light on resources as well, just like a butterfly.

I've been working with computers for almost 10 years. Norton Antivirus was always a great anti-virus, but after 2005/6 it just kept getting bigger and bigger and slowing PCs down more and more. Haven't used it in 4 years, but I'd bet it's just getting worse.
AVG's free version is a pretty good anti-virus, but these days I see more and more people getting infected with Trojans and spyware on PCs with AVG, so I've lost my faith in it.
Personally, I think for the best free AV, go for Avira, and for a paid anti-virus, NOD32.
update:
Just noticed Cyber-Tracker gave basically the same answer. Sorry man, didn't read everyone's replies. Well, you know what they say about great minds. ;)

What allows nod32, avg beats it. what makes kaspersky troublesome, avg handle it friendly. Choose by your brain. I always respect all avg product. And even avg free can fu.k other licensed antivirus soft's shortcoming. It's the truth!

Well AVG is better then nothing ofcourse :)) but I know many people around here that feels and know diffrently. Personal if I had too choose on a freebie I would rather go with Avira or Avast then AVG.
Btw funny as hell to see people start reply to a thread thats 3 years old!
