Cduniverse.com:
Chet Baker could hang just as well as the cats back East, as he proves on the classic CHET BAKER IN NEW YORK. To quell the East vs. West debate, Baker joined New York all-stars like Johnny Griffin, Al Haig, and the Miles Davis rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones for a rousing session that is one for the history books. Listening to these seven standards, there's little doubt that this cross-pollination was a successful experiment.

Baker, sticking to trumpet, sounds just as smooth and laid back as usual. From brisk numbers such as "Hotel 49" to blue ballads such as "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," the trumpeter always projects his cool image, only now with a subtle urging from his East Coast sidemen. Griffin is complimentary to the leader, and shines on tasty solo spots such as Benny Golson's swinging opener "Fair Weather." Chambers and Jones get a chance to record a very different take of Davis' classic "Solar," here featuring Baker's velvety wanderings at a mid-tempo lope. Other choice cuts in this experiment include the bouncing "When Lights Are Low" and Benny Goodman's lazily swinging "Soft Winds."

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Al Haig (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums)

Tracks:
1. Fair Weather
2. Polka Dots & Moonbeams
3. Hotel 49
4. Solar
5. Blue Thoughts
6. When Lights Are Low
7. Soft Wind (Bonus Track)

Chet Baker's 1983 Swedish tour captures the trumpeter going through the motions -- extraordinary motions. The groove he got into in the 1980s in Europe found him performing excellent concert after excellent concert in places like Paris, Bologna and here in Gothenburg. Chet sings on My Ideal and But Not for Me and cooks up some compelling understated solos, too. To the casual fan this will sound like any old Chet Baker live record. For the aficionado it will reveal another facet of his sound and evolution, the tragic and the sublime.

AMG:
This CD features the trumpeter with his good friend tenor-saxophonist Phil Urso and pianist Dave MacKay in a quintet performing live in his hometown. The playing is excellent but the recording quality is a bit disappointing, making this potentially valuable set (a straight-ahead session performed at a time when Baker's studio recordings were very commercial) of greatest interest to Chet Baker completists.

Personnel: Chet Baker (fluegelhorn, vocals); Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Dave McKay (piano); Harry Keevis Jr. (drums)

Tracks:
1. Airegin (11:08)
2. 'Round Midnight (8:42)
3. Green Dolphin Street - Luscious Loo (12:35)
4. Mister B. (12:08)
5. Forgetful (vocal) (5:35)
6. Milestone - Lucious Loo (10:44)

Chet Baker - My Favorite Songs - The Last Great Concert (1988)

This 1988 concert turned out to be Chet Baker's swan song, because he died just two weeks after this performance, after a still-unexplained fall from a hotel balcony. Baker is alternately heard with either the NDR Big Band, the Radio Orchestra Hannover, or a small group, sticking mostly to standards and classic jazz compositions. Baker, who could be very inconsistent during the period after his teeth were knocked out in a brawl, is in top form throughout this evening. Baker's understated, haunting playing of "All Blues" has a special poignancy. He opens the evening with "My Funny Valentine" backed solely by guitar, with a delayed entrance by pianist Walter Norris (with whom he last played three decades earlier) and the 43-piece orchestra; his vocals quaver a bit but are quite sincere. Baker seems energized by the snappy chart of "Well, You Needn't," which features another old friend from his West Coast days, alto saxophonist Herb Geller.

The leader is joined by a four-piece rhythm section anchored by Norris for an easygoing jaunt through Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." The big band is again on-hand for the richly textured arrangement of John Lewis' "Django," with Baker making every note count. This double-CD set is also available as two separate CDs and, in one form or another, is highly recommended. In 2004, Enja reissued a new 2-volume/14-track set, with both volumes combined in one affordable set.

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet & vocal) with the NDR-Bigband, Radio Orchestra Hannover. Recorded in concert on April 28th, 1988 at the Funkhaus Hannover, West Germany

Chet Baker - No Problem (1979)
MP3 ~ 320Kbps ~ Covers, Liner Notes & Scans ~ RS.com ~ 135mb
Original Release Date: October 2, 1979
Time: 51:19
Label: Steeplechase

This is arguably Chet Baker's best recording for SteepleChase, and it's also one of the hardest to find. This recording is great because it is unlike most other Baker recordings. There are no standards here, only seven great Duke Jordan compositions. Also, Chet plays a rarely-heard muted trumpet on several cuts. It sounds like he had fun making this one, it's too bad Baker and Jordan didn't record together more often. It is strange that one of Chet's greatest albums has one of the worst pictures of him on the cover!

AMG:
Pianist Duke Jordan's presence adds some punch and spark to this quartet session, which is further helped along by bassist Niels Henning-Orsted Pedersen and selections that are suited for Baker's increasingly mellow and wavering playing.

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet, vocal); Norman Fearrington (drums); Duke Jordan (piano); Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass)

Tracks:
1. No Problem - 9:45
2. Sultry Eve - 7:04
3. Glad I Met Pat - 5:08
4. Kiss of Spain - 7:15
5. The Fuzz - 6:05
6. My Queen Is Home to Stay - 7:13
7. Jealous Blues - 8:49

Chet Baker - Oh You Crazy Moon (1978)
MP3 ~ 320Kbps ~ Covers & Scans ~ RS.com ~ 149mb ~ 5% File Recovery

http://i29.tinypic.com/xn84ew.jpg

AMG:
Chet Baker's 1978 European tour with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Scott Lee, and drummer Jeff Brillinger produced several recordings of varying quality. Live at Nick's is considered a classic, whereas Two a Day, recorded only one month later, is less consistently rewarding. The tapes on which Oh You Crazy Moon is based were recorded live in Stuttgart within the same few weeks as the Two a Day concerts, and are certainly worth hearing, if not quite essential. Baker's accompanists provide most of the truly transcendent musical moments; special credit is due to Markowitz, whose sensitive and careful piano playing is at all times perfectly suited to both Baker's voice and his trumpet, even when both are less than completely assured themselves. When Baker falters a bit at the beginning of "Beautiful Black Eyes," the rhythm section helps him along until he finds his feet; on a rollicking take of "Love for Sale," however, he seems to be having more fun. His de rigueur rendition of "My Funny Valentine," which ends the set, is the warmest and most confident piece on the album. Overall, this is an album his established fans will enjoy, but those looking for a good entry into his voluminous catalog will do best to start with the 1950s recordings that made him a star.

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet, vocals); Phil Markowitz (piano); Scott Lee (bass); Jeff Brillinger (drums)

Tracks:
1. Touch of Your Lips (10:58)
2. Beautiful Black Eyes (14:30)
3. Oh You Crazy Moon (9:15)
4. Love for Sale (11:33)
5. Once Upon a Summertime (8:56)
6. My Funny Valentine (8:58)
