I can speak fluent French and Spanish. I`m always amazed by how many people from countries on every continent, speak English. Which is great, as it means English speaking people like me can be lazy and not have to learn many other languages, and yet we can still understand, and be understood by, almost everybody.

English is my mainstay but I have a few key phrases for the different countries I'm in. Whatever language is necessary:

Spanish -- helped out when I lived in New Mexico
French -- came in handy when I worked with the french air force
German -- stops in Germany
Japanese -- when I'm out and about on the weekends
Tagalog -- when I'm hanging out with some of my friends
Russian -- when I worked in Kyrgyzstan

Just the essentials: please, thank you, have a nice day, and enough to ask for a beer and a sandwich!

My friends speak it so damn fast! It's hard to follow! Plus all the nasal sounds...I luck out--sometimes the Tagalog word is the same as English, or Spanish.

Well in my main language (Dutch/Flemish) we use all the possible ways sounds can be pronounced in languages (at least most), so it's more easy to learn other languages...from my point of view.

For example; someone English learning Dutch will rarely be able to pronounce things right, while the other way around it goes pretty easy.

1900 - 1945

That time frame in Britain, France, Germany and Russia is is very interesting, and the majority of history docs I watch are of that period.

And the early 20th century in America, very good stuff. Keeps me interested anyway.

Although I am not too interested in learning another language, although if I made the time to do so, it would be German.
