I'm new too , but this I know , you will need to go to www.winrar.com and get their free software so that you can open the rar files ,I save to the desktop , scan for virus's as soon as they finsih, for music I go to my music and choose new folder if the artist is not already there ,and drag and drop into it , it self-populates, apps I just install . Sorry I can't be much more help right now , I hope this helps !Good luck .

You may be a newbie, but not brainless since you asked for help.

Most files posted to download are made by winrar.
This is a program to pack up the file in smaller parts, compress to amaller size and makes password protection possible.
You'll need winrar, winzip or 7zip to extract the file back to one.
If the complete file is a cd or dvd it is often backed up as an isofile to the harddisk before cutting it in parts.
An iso is an image of the original cd/dvd wich you have to burn tp a cd or dvd (depending on size) before you can use it.
For this you need burning software like nero and ultraiso to read the iso.
If the iso is a game then the original protection of the cd/dvd has not been added to the iso. Then you can install the game but not play it since the game will ask for the code that was on the original.
For this problem there are so called nocd/dvd patches wich are sometimes included or have to be downloaded.

that's it for now.
If more help needed just ask.

Nice response FHM.

I'd like to add a few things:-

All this winrar, wizip stuff, I use zipgenius, it is freeware and can extract all of these file types. Saves running multiple programs :D

Iso, cue and bin files are all forms of disc images, they can be burnt using Nero or other burning software. They can also however, be read straight from your harddrive using software such as Daemon. This creates a 2"virtual" drive where you can mount the image too. This then allows you to run the disc as normal without actually having to burn it to disc first.

Also, most files on katz have been uploaded to a hosting site such as Rapidshare or Megaupload (NB there are loads more of these sites out there). To download from these you can use a free account, countdown timer before d/l's start, only 1 d/l at a time, 60 min cooldown period. So not the best option for 40 part games etc, this can be overcome by certain software. Otherwise you could get a premium account, as many d/l's as you can cope with at any one time, no cooldown period etc.

I am really not sure how "new" you are to all this so some of this you might know but: -

with movies they can come in many forms...iso, cue, avi, mp4 and encoded using all sorts of stuff. To play these you are going to need to install a good codec pack on your machine. The best ones are here on katz, just search for "codecs".

If you'd like to be more specific about what it is your d/l i.e. music, games, books, movies, software etc, we can be more specific in our responses.

Anyway, hope this helped :D

One of the other concerns for noobs (and experts alike) is that the web browser you choose to utilize (Make mine FireFox, please) must be setup such that you can actually enable javascripts (per site basis), so that your downloads can be allowed to be transferred to your machine.

It is also a good idea to create a dedicated root folder in your C:\ drive (HardDiskDrive) that allows you to download all your files to a depository that can be readily accessed. You may wish to call this root folder something like C:\DLz or sumsuch. You must make a conscientious effort to always download all such files to a single directory from which you can easily run Virus/Spyware directly!

My preferred zip/archiving program of choice is the PowerArchiver utility but it must be supplemented by WinRAR, if you need to create *.rar files >> PowerArchiver can unzip *.rar files but cannot create them as readily as WinRAR.

Your all right to add the extras and there is ofcourse much more to add:
There are many more archivers, such as win ace and KGB powerzip, that can achieve this and ofcourse many more imagingtools, clonecd, alcohol 120 and so on. I just picked the ones easiest and most commen to use.

About the downloading all the tricks you can find by cheating rapidshare depend on wich kind of connection you got (static ip=fixed ip or dynamic- changies everytime you connect to the internet) All the cheats you can find are for dynamic ip and if you're so lucky to have that you only need a small tool to download as much as you want and that is renew-IP. This program resets your Ip adress without restarting. the only thing you have to be aware of is the cookie that has been sent to you when you download.
If the renewal of your IP alone doesn't work, just cleanup your cookies and try again.
