Can anyone make any sense out of the no... DX10.1 Fiasco?
INQ Article Here: http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2007/08/09/vole-shoots-foot-with-101-upgrade points out that there is nothing for gamers there anyway? What does it take to enable and use DX10.1?

Thr ATI White Paper Here: http://ati.amd.com/products/pdf/DirectX10.1WhitePaperv1.0FINAL.pdf

Actually, that's nothing new. Even with previous directx such as DX9.0, 9.0a, 9.0b and so on. It basically adds new feature for newer hardware to support, but it isn't mandatory. If you look at computer games requirement, They either require SM1.0 (DX8) or SM2.0(DX9). They don't require DX9.0b, or DX9.0c.

Of course new cards will support it, but there's no reason for previous generation of card becomes obsolete because of this. They will become obsolete once their performance is obsolete.

Game developers will also eventually supports it, there's nothing to lose, simply because its backward compatible. User with newer hardware that supports it will have that feature, but user with older hardware will not face any problem.

Today it seems that ATI 3800 Series are the only cards that are ready. But how is DX10.1 enabled? I believe that we need Vista, which version is not clear, and SP1 to enable DX 10.1.... and ATI HD 3800 Series Card/s. INQ has an article Here: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/12/31/second-inqpressions-amd-phenom that pits the 9900 against the QX9770. Too bad they did not include photos of XP and Vista SP1 FOR DX10.1 reference.

DirectX 10 is only available as part of Windows Vista, on top of that you will need a graphics card that has DirectX 10 support otherwise it wont work properly.

Since there so many bugs and glitches in Vista I aint bothering with it until at least the first service pack is released (probably not even then!!)

Hope this helps?

Peace :)
