Without a Trace is a fast-paced procedural drama about the Missing Persons Squad of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The sole responsibility of the special task force is to find missing persons by applying advanced psychological profiling techniques to peel back the layers of the victims' lives and trace their whereabouts in an effort to discover whether they have been abducted, been murdered, committed suicide or simply run away. The team reconstructs a "Day of Disappearance" timeline that details every minute of the 24 hours prior to the disappearance, following one simple rule: learn who the victim is in order to learn where the victim is.

The four-year-old adopted son of a celebrity couple is kidnapped, and the team must determine if the reason has to deal with the parents' status or the boy's own Sudanese origin.

When a woman and a young boy are murdered in a house, CSI processes the scene and a hit on VICAP from a palm print found in the house ties the LV case to a NY kidnapping case six years earlier. This result prompts a visit from the FBI’s special Agent Jack Malone who flies in from New York with details of the earlier case; an adopted boy was taken from his home and his babysitter was murdered. He's been missing ever since. Grissom and Malone realize that the killer is riding the freight train to various points, then hopping off and killing other victims. The man, Terry Wicker, next takes a young boy from a local school having kidnapped his ex-wife. When Grissom and Malone locate the man’s vehicle, they find the missing woman dead in the trunk. Meanwhile, Wicker leaves town on a bus, with his son beside him

S06E06 ‘Where and Why’
Picking up where CSI left off in the episode entitled "Who and What," ruthless serial killer Terry Lee Wicker is fleeing across Arizona with his abducted son, Kobe. Jack Malone and Gil Grissom arrive at a pharmacy that was broken into moments after Wicker and Kobe got off a bus in that town. They find evidence that the fugitive and the boy have altered their appearances with hair dye and other items stolen from the pharmacy. With little to go on, the FBI team works with Grissom to analyze Wicker's killing spree, hoping to discern from a scattershot pattern of violence where the killer may have taken the boy. They discover that Wicker was in a relationship with Kobe's mother years ago in New York--a tryst that resulted in Kobe--and now father and son appear to be returning to that city.
