Williams in 1984 after her group, the Plasmatics, "broke-up". In 1982, Kiss asked for Wendy and the Plasmatics to appear as a Special Guest on their tour. By the end of the tour with Kiss it was clear that, although the formal notice that Capitol Records didn't come for another for six months, the relationship with Capitol was done. Gene Simmons approached Wendy and Rod about producing the next Wendy O. Williams album. So as to avoid any wasted time in legal issues with Capitol Records, it was decided not to use the Plasmatics name on the record at all and was simply called W.O.W., the initials for Wendy O. Williams. Gene Simmons felt it would give him the freedom he wanted to add more new players to the album. Wes Beech remained to play rhythm and lead and T.C.Tolliver, the drummer on Coup d'Etat, remained to play on the new album. Gene Simmons would play bass under the pseudonym of "Reginald Van Helsing", the only other new player on the album was lead guitarist Michael Ray to solve the technical challenges that had been a problem for several albums and had come to a head with the more complex music of Coup D'Etat. Gene also pulled in the talents of Ace Frehley, who hadn't played with Kiss since leaving the band years before, Paul Stanley, and then-current Kiss drummer Eric Carr did one song as guests. The record was released through Passport/JEM. Gene Simmons himself co-writes five tracks (which also carry the names of Plasmatics bassist Junior Romanelli and lead guitarist Richie Stotts, who aren't actually on the album). Wendy lost her trademark Mohawk during this album, opting instead to keep it more simple. This is the first time Gene Simmons ever played outside of Kiss, playing bass under the pseudonym "Reginald Van Helsing" The main riff of "Legends Never Die" was originally from an unused song on Kiss' own Creatures of the Night album. Despite being called Wendy's solo debut, the bands official biography from their website states that the lack of a Plasmatics title is only superficial and is still an official Plasmatics album ![]()

The music for the most part sounds like a mix of latter day Kreator with a heavier reliance on grooves and way more variations in tempo. Album opener Fuel of My Soul starts things off in impressive fashion with a marked German influence before a percussion heavy break in the middle of the song shows that these Poles are anything but predictable. In fact, Verses of Steel turns out to be quite an unpredictable album. Sure, the bands songwriting stems from the 80s euro-thrash scene and some elements of hardcore but they are constantly changing things around on the album. There are bits here that sound like Sepultura circa Chaos AD and there’s rock n roll, classic heavy metal and the kind of groovy thrash riffs that you’d find on a Machine Head album. Little bit of something for everybody then. What makes Verses of Steel enjoyable is that most of the songs work in spite of the different influences. Stand out tracks include In a Black Sail Wrapped with its Chaos AD like chorus, Swallow the Needle which sounds like the groove thrash of Sweden’s Facedown and the slowed down bluesy rock n roll of album closer Blues Beatdown. The core of the band, bassist/vocalist Titus, drummer Slimak and guitarist Spider have been together since the debut and it shows as the band sounds tight and solid. The only thing that prevents me from giving this a full on recommendation is that the album is a bit too long. At just over fifty minutes, the band could have easily cut a few songs from the album as Meltdown of Sanctity and The Rust I Feed are both pretty boring and succeed in slowing down the momentum of the album. All in all, I have to say that Verses of Steel is a fun album for fans of the modern thrash groove sound and they are a bit more interesting than your average band. .......... A grower IMO with some interesting variations

Low-frequency instrumentation, dark production, pounding drumming (enough of groovy parts, also), venomous bass lines, a variety in vocals (theatrical, petite-distorted at times, futuristic here and there, dual leads also visible). If no one tells you the band breathes 20 years of life you wouldn’t suppose so, I guess. The album is powerful, fresh and hostile. It definitely is a ’Metal’ album (do not even think of any ’Nu’ or ’New’ stuff over ’ere) and will not leave less-than-30 followers unsatisfied. Crazy solos, lucid songwriting and not much reference to the basics. Of course, old-school metalheads will not be pleased that much by the sound/style approach (it’s kinda "industrial", at times), but let’s not forget MARSHALL LAW was born at the end of the glorious 80s. Hence, all I’d ask - personally - for is some melody in tracks (like in "Nothing Lasts Forever", for example), since it seems the whole album’s spirit tastes revenge and outburst fury. In regards to the band’s previous discography, I’d evaluate "Razorhead" as a reasonable sequence, bearing in mind what the climax in the band’s worx was till now. The album is nearly 70 minutes long, with no song treated as a filler. MARSHALL LAW surely tried hard in writing/recording for "Razorhead" (don’t know if the title itself unveils some reference) and waited long enough to release this CD. If you like JUDAS PRIEST’s post-80s deeds, the furious Metal scene of Central Europe (e.g. BRAINSTORM comes to mind in no particular reason, plus some ’gloomy’ U.D.O., a little of ’late’ ANGELDUST or down-on-earth MORGANA LEFAY etc) and latest ’just Heavy’ albums you’ll dig this one. ............ Hell yeah ,Metalhead stuff from the UK ![]()

The word that comes to mind while I was cranking the Screamin' Lords CD. The songs and the musicianship kicks ass! Erik Turner – Guitarist WARRANT Jose Ferro, bassist for Agentz, left New York for California to pursue his musical career. During an annual music convention in Anaheim, California, Jose met Dustin Boyer, an L.A. Musician whose band ‘Descanso’ caught his attention. They then approached Chris Collier, an employee at ESP Guitars, who is a talented drummer and also plays guitar. The opportunity of putting together a group of great musicians was starting to gel. Jose wanted to remain true to a guitar–oriented band, and the group became complete with another guitarist, Jason Gile. He and Jason met when Jose first arrived in Los Angeles. The Screamin’ Lords were born. “The simple concept for the band was to have a core group of high quality musicians, along with my personal favorite guest musicians to appear on a CD,” says Jose. The name was conceived during Jose’s travel to U.K. “I was watching a debate on television of a meeting of the House of Lords and everyone was screaming at each other. I was thinking - hmm...the Screamin’ Lords. I thought it was a great name not only for the band, but also for the guest players on the CD”. Jose now wanted to find the right vocalist for the Screamin’ Lords. He contacted Robin McCauley (Survivor, MSG) who recorded a song featured on the CD. It was at that time than Robin joined Survivor and went on the road. Then, Jose remembered a singer that he felt would be a great addition, so he called George Lynch regarding Kelly Keeling. In 2005, The Screamin’ Lords were invited to play the ESP Guitar Company’s 30th Anniversary Party, along with Megadeth and George Lynch. When George played that night, Kelly sang with him. It was then that Kelly caught Jose’s attention. Jose did make that call and not long after, Kelly and The Screamin’ Lords were in the studio to record the basic tracks. The CD is true to the guitar-oriented style, in the genre of AC/DC and Judas Priest. Ballsy but bluesy, this CD screams of pure rock at its finest. ‘Long Live Me’ features Jose Ferro, bass and guitars, Dustin Boyer, lead and rhythm guitars, Jason Gile, lead and rhythm guitars and Chris Collier on drums. The guest artists are: Kelly Keeling (Trans Siberian Orchestra, Lynch Mob, MSG) – Lead Vocals Robin McCauley (Survivor, MSG) – Lead Vocals George Lynch (Lynch Mob, Dokken) – Lead Guitar Chris Poland (Ohm, Megadeth) – Lead Guitar Gus G (Firewind, Dream Evil) – Lead Guitar Loren Molinare (Little Caesar) – Rhythm Guitar The CD ‘Long Live Me’ was mixed by MUDROCK (Godsmack, Avenge Sevenfold). .......... Despite using the word 'modern', Beautiful Creatures don't forsake melody, memorable hooks and guitar solos as most of the modern hard bands do. What strikes me as more modern is the almost punk like delivery and the raw productions. Also, Bassist Kenny Kweens tacktfully employs five-string lower register bass riffs, that is pretty uncommon in the Aerosmith inspired metal that was popular in the late 1980's. Basically, Beautiful Creatures are a modern heavy metal band! So I suppose that this will make them unpopular with a crowd that seems to think that lack of skill is cooler than being able to master your instrument. Regardless, Beautiful Creatures bring the fun back into hard rock. Here's hoping that more bands like this will begin popping up on major labels, delivering melody, skillful songwriting and good time rock 'n' roll. ................... Excellent hard rockin album with added sleaze components ![]()

Mixing their several diverse influences, the band have created an album different from the typical "true metal" style -sometimes reminding you of 80's hard rock-, after the release of their self-produced 4 track demo "Spirit Of Freedom" in the summer of 2000, mixed by Gamma Ray mastermind Kai Hansen and his bandmate Dirk Schlächter. The title track and opener shows immediately the characteristic elements of Taraxacum you'll hear on this album: great melodies, clean production and the typical screams of Rick Mythiasin. "Blast Off" is a fast Power Metal track, followed by "Alone", an emotive ballad with a great singing perfomance by Rick. The midtempo song "Circle Of Fools" is next (very catchy and melodic). Prog-inspired track "Delirium" is very atmospheric and Rick's vocals are excellent here. Next is "Life Goes On", a melodic hard rock-inspired track. "Never Let You Go" is a powerful hymn dominated by Doernberg's keyboards. Another ballad ("Believe In You") and the fast "Think!" end the CD. Their songs are strong, emotional and varied and Rick's vocals are REALLY impressive. Taraxacum is something fresh and dynamic, so don't expect a mixture of Edguy/Steel Prophet or a Gamma Ray clone. ................ Excellent ![]()
