Tony Carey is a multi-instrumentalist, multi-talented, and multi-faceted individual. And he taps deeply into that multitude of facets on 1931, which is to be part one of the Go Out Dancing trilogy.

In 1978 Carey left Rainbow and he left California and he settled in Germany. Besides his career as a successful producer and a small-part actor (Full Metal Jacket), he has released over 30 CDs. Three of these were under the Planet P Project, and the eponymous Planet P record hit the top-10 in the album charts in the early '80s. In 2003, some two decades later, Carey released 1931, subtitled Go Out Dancing Part 1. Record 2 will be Levittown, focusing on the 1950s, and Out In The Rain will examine the state of unfortunates around the world.
................

1931

1931 is the first in a trilogy of CDs that will chronicle the last 100 years of world society. It starts with the amazing "My Radio Talks To Me" about 1931 Nazi propaganda. It jumps to Japan with "Join the Parade". We take a tour of Italy and so on and so forth until Carey touches on all the feelings and people that participated in the turning point of the world.
1931 Examines America's first radio evangelist who supported pre-Hitler Germany and the radicalism of that era; and it explores Hirohito's Japan, the McVeigh-set in modern day America. Ten songs run 4 to 6 radio-friendly minutes and each vignettes a troubled time in recent history - usually viewed from the personal perspective of a victim or participant, and always told with a biting cynicism that defines the tone of this whole CD. This satire is expressed through the prose, over-dubbed spoken voices or snippets of the historical speeches delivered to adoring masses by charismatic dictators.

Musically - the sound is very full. It is dominated to some extent by a prominent drum machine which lends it a 1980s vibe, but the rest of the instruments and the sampled overlays and particularly the vocals give it a modern hard-rock meets progressive rock feel. Carey plays most instruments in most songs and no major credits are given to any other artist - only a brief acknowledgement of 3 guest artists. This is very much a one-man project.

The hard-hitting lyrics are descriptive and easily heard and are dripping with cynicism. But don't let that turn you off. The rich progressive rock yields a great listen, and the you have to admire Carey's ambition and courage in producing a challenging, intelligent piece of music that comments at once on contemporary values, and on the darkest events in our recent history.
...............
Levittown

The “Go Out Dancing” trilogy, of which “Levittown” is part 2, chronicles the history of the 20th century, or at least mainman Tony Carey’s vision of it. The first part dealt with (among other things) the rise of fascism and the Second World War. “Levittown” follows where “1931” ended – the post-war rebuilding of American society.

‘Levittown’ refers to a project started by architect Bill Levitt – the building of huge numbers of similar-looking houses for returning war veterans. Along with Holiday Inn hotels and McDonald’s, symbols of conformity for American (all-white, of course) families. It is clear that Tony Carey (ex-RAINBOW), the brain behind PLANET P PROJECT, is quite critical of his native country, the United States (he has been living in Germany and Spain for years). The accusations to America’s leaders are not to be misunderstood here (‘Where We Want You’ is particularly condemning). Other subjects Carey touches are religious fundamentalism, the murder of the Kennedy’s and Martin Luther King, communism and McCarthyism, 9/11, and... the end of the world. The perfect time to ‘go out dancing’, according to Carey.

You might say that there are still a lot of PINK FLOYD/Roger Waters influences in PLANET P PROJECT’s sound, and to a certain extent that is true. But in all honesty, Tony Carey has developed a style that is very much his own. The acoustic driven parts, the 80’s electronic pop sound, the jazzy feel at times, the slightly progressive tendencies, the more singer-songwriter styled pieces... all mixed in true Carey-style. I honestly can’t name one artist who sounds anything like him.

“Levittown” is less chilling than “1931” and definitely not way up there with 1984’s “Pink World”, but it is still highly recommended.
....

Excellent stuff

Broken China is a prog rock solo album by Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright. It documents his wife's battle with depression, and is very much like a classic Pink Floyd concept album in its structure and overall feel. Two songs, "Reaching for the Rail" and "Breakthrough" feature Sinéad O'Connor on lead vocals, with Wright singing elsewhere. The album was recorded in the Wrights' personal studio in France.

The picture on the front of the CD gives you a clue. It's a picture of a monkey/gorilla watching TV. Well, of course it is. In interviews around the time of the release of this album, Roger spoke of a book he'd read titled 'Amusing Ourselves To Death', a book which lent this album its title and also placed an image in Rogers mind. Roger, happy go-lucky chap that he is, always with a kind word and a smile for everybody.... (??!) found himself imagining the human race, literally, amusing themselves to death. Via the television set. Lots of human skeletons sat in front of their television sets. Factor in some usual Waters preoccupations, eg, war, politics, etc, etc - that's your 'Amused To Death' album. Sounds cheery doesn't it?? Well, no, it doesn't - and reviewers at the time responded in a predictable fasion - Roger Waters, "the gloomiest man in rock".

Oh, things get terribly complicated, Roger spent too much time thinking about politics and war, the first gulf war, more politics - ties it all in, masterfully actually - with his concept for the album, television, and it's impact and negative influence. 'What God Wants', both parts of the song - are stupendous. Ah, the first part, coming off the opening track?? The funkiest Roger Waters moment for an eon.

It even slipped quietly into the UK top 40 singles charts. Ah, lots of things. Female vocals and more atmospherics for 'Perfect Sense', a soft, beautiful song. "It all makes perfect sense, expressed in dollars and cents" sings Roger. 'Late Home Tonight' is the one for me, though. Sat right in the middle of the album - and if you consider both parts of the song as a single whole, especially masterful. It's a story - a wonderful story with humour, pathos, seriousness, a message. And it winds back, it has a proper beginning middle and end.

Roger has done little since this album, he said at one point he was going to become a classical composer. Which strikes me as being bizarre. Whatever, 'Amused To Death' is masterful. Better than Dave Gilmour led Pink Floyd? It sold a whole ton less.... Well, the question doesn't even need to be asked. Pink Floyd lost Syd, then they lost Roger. Roger kept Pink Floyd going, he learnt as he went along, how to write, and 'Dark Side Of The Moon' was the obvious watershed. After that? Well, perhaps he moved beyond the other guys in the band. Roger does a particular thing, and listening to this album has driven up my respect for him ten-fold.
.........
Top 3 best ever progressive rock album IMO,

Peter's new album "the Spiritual World" really shows Peter's talent as an all round accomplished musician, he plays all the guitars, bass, and keys on the album and is beautifully complimented by Steve Thorne, Simon Clew, and Steve Christey. A mixture of vocal songs and instrumental tracks this is a nicely balanced album. Steve vocals on this album are stunning, at times quite Gabrielesque and fragile and at other times with inspiration or strength and sorrow. Whatever your faith I think that this is a pretty inspiring body of work and well worth the wait!

Peter says ........

You don't have to have any kind of faith or beliefs to enjoy my albums. I simply write the music and lyrics that come to me. But nothing is in your face at all, anyone can take or leave any of the songs. I simply aim to write good melodic songs and lyrics that capture a feeling or an atmosphere which is positive.

The musical style of my albums is like Pendragon, but not as heavy guitarwise, nor with so many instrumental passages. I tend to write mainly short songs and instrumentals. But they tend to be melodic as infuenced by me growing up listening to Camel, Genesis and Pink Floyd.
But there are also other influences in there like Steely dan, Pat Metheny, Jean Luc Ponty and some pop and dance stuff too.
