Cool Chet Baker Megapost #1

Chet Baker - At Capolinea [Live] (1983)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 105mb ~ Covers & Scans
Recorded October 1983, Milano, Italy
Time: 43.36 mins
Label: Red Records 123206-2

This studio session is distinguished by excellent, mostly Italian jazz tunes, and a very attractive group of players not usually associated with the trumpeter. The compatible flute of Nicola Stilo wonderfully complements Baker's dry, unemotional sound, while the addition of a third horn, Diane Varva's soprano sax, adds body to the sound (Chet's long time girlfriend). A very strong rhythm section of pianist Michel Grailler, bassist Riccardo dal Fr , and drummer Leo Mitchel rounds out a tight, well-groomed collective. Baker is in fine form, but he skips the vocals. Bruno Martino's "Estate" is hauntingly rendered, while J.J. Johnson's "Lament" is given an attractive reading. This amounts to a very accessible, enjoyable set of tunes — one that may not win any awards, but should reward those who appreciate the delicate and lovely nature of Chet Baker's art.

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Nicola Stilo (flute); Diane Varvra (soprano saxophone); Michel Grailler (piano);
Riccardo Del Fra (bass); Leo Mitchell (drums)

Tracks:
Estaté (Martino) - 11:50
Francamente (Stilo) - 5:13
Dream Drop (Grailler/Grailler) - 4:22
Lament (Johnson) - 9:34
Pioggia Sul Deserto (Stilo) - 5:24
Finestra Sul Mare (Dal Fra) - 6:50

Chet Baker - Estival Jazz, Lugano, Switzerland (1980)
MP3 ~ 256kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 85mb
Recording Date: July 2, 1980
Time: 48:24
Format: Bootleg

The Estival Jazz in Lugano was once called the "biggest" of Europe's small jazz festivals and is on the circuit of major international jazz festivals. The Estival Jazz unites world-famous names in Lugano (on the well-known Piazza Riforma) and its surroundings every year. There are more than 100 hours of the best there is in all fields of jazz - in the open-air and for free! This superbly recorded bootleg features Chet Baker in good form in his July 1980 appearance at the Estival, in a quintet of European jazz musicians. The highlight of the album is an excellent 16-minute rendition of 'Night Bird'.

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Nicola Stilo (flute); Carl Ratzer (electric guitar); Riccardo Del Fra (double bass); Tullio De Piscopo (drums)

Tracks:
1. Night Bird (15:59)
2. Tempus Fugit (12:47)
3. Leaving (19:38)

Chet Baker Quartet - Burnin' At Backstreet (1980)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Cover ~ RS.com ~ 154mb ~ 5% File Recovery
Recording Date: February 19, 1980
Time: 77:14
Label: Fresh Sound FSR-CD 128

Appropriately titled, as Chet was hot that night. The recording quality is average, you hear many hoots and hollers from the enthusiastic crowd, Chet's microphone doesn't work on the last tune, and he has to abandon his vocals mid-song, and the band can be heard bickering through a few tunes. But when Chet plays... Rarely have you heard him play with such fire and intensity. He blows loud, high and fast. The excitement of these performances overcome any flaws this recording may have. - Chetbakertribute.com

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); Drew Salperto (piano); Mike Formanek (bass); Artt Frank (drums)

Tracks:
1. Tune Up - 15:20
2. Milestones - 13:05
3. Blue 'n' Boogie - 10:35
4. Stella By Starlight - 17:34
5. Four - 15:05
6. Just Friends - 5:35 [incomplete]

Chet Baker - Peace (1982)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ Covers ~ RS.com ~ 98mb
Recorded in Munchen, West Germany, February 23, 1982
Time: 41:07
Label: Enja (G) ENJ 4016)

This one is a bit unusual since the trumpeter is accompanied by David Friedman (on vibes and marimba), bassist Buster Williams and drummer Joe Chambers. The music (which includes two takes of "Syzgies/3+1=5" on the re- issue Enja ENJ 1021) is somewhat challenging ("The Song Is You" is the only standard) and it inspires Baker to come up with some lyrical statements. There are many Chet Baker recordings from his final decade and his true fans will want to pick up this one. - AMG

Personnel: Chet Baker (trumpet); David Friedman (vibraphone); Buster Williams (bass); Joe Chambers (drums)

Tracks:
1. Syzgies [3+1=5] (7:37)
2. Peace (4:10)
3. Lament For Thelonious (10:12)
4. The Song Is For You (7:08)
5. Shadows (4:30)
6. For Now (7:30)

Chet Baker and Jim Hall - Studio Trieste (1982)
MP3 ~ 320kbps ~ RS.com ~ 95mb ~ Covers
Recording Date: March, April, 1982
Time: 38:11
Label: CTI / King, Japan

Chetbakertribute.com:
Another high-quality CTI session arranged by Don Sebesky. Like 'Concierto', this album features long tracks with unusual, very original arrangements. You've never heard Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake quite like this before.

Dustygroove.com:
A great later date from CTI -- proof that the label still had its magic going on well into the 80s! The session's a larger group effort headed up by Don Sebesky, and featuring key solos by Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Hubert Laws -- all of whom get plenty of room to do their thing on the album's longer tracks! Other players include Kenny Barron, Jack Wilkins, Jorge Dalto, George Mraz, and Steve Gadd -- plus bit of added percussion -- and although the group is large, the overall sound is relatively lean -- spacious and airy, in keeping with Baker's best moments on records like these, and always sensitive enough to let Hall's gentle work on the strings of his guitar shine through nicely! Titles include "Malaguena", "Django", "Swan Lake", and "All Blues".

Personnel: Jim Hall, guitar; Chet Baker, trumpet and flugelhorn; Hubert Laws, flutes; Steve Gadd, drums; Sammy Figueroa, percussion; Kenny Barron, piano, tracks 1, 4; Jorge Dalto, keyboards, tracks 2, 3; Gary King, bass guitar, tracks 2, 3;
George Mraz, double bass, tracks 1, 4; Jack Wilkins, guitar, track 2

Tracks:
1. Swan Lake (8:42)
2. All Blues (9:43)
3. Malaguena (9:44)
4. Django (10:02)

Allmusic.com:
Baker's Holiday finds Chet Baker effectively paying tribute to Billie Holiday with mellow trumpet solos and occasional vocals. Baker is backed by a full sax section and a four-piece rhythm section that includes pianist Hank Jones; Jimmy Mundy contributed the colorful arrangements. His performance of ten songs associated with Lady Day (most of which he had not recorded previously) is often exquisite.

Chet Baker (flugelhorn); Everett Barksdale (guitar); Leon Cohen (reeds); Richard Anthony Davis (bass); Henry Freeman (reeds); Wilford Holcombe (reeds); Hank Jones (piano); Connie Kay (drums);
Seldon Powell (reeds); Alan Ross (reeds)
