This studio session is distinguished by excellent, mostly Italian jazz tunes, and a very attractive group of players not usually associated with the trumpeter. The compatible flute of Nicola Stilo wonderfully complements Baker's dry, unemotional sound, while the addition of a third horn, Diane Varva's soprano sax, adds body to the sound (Chet's long time girlfriend). A very strong rhythm section of pianist Michel Grailler, bassist Riccardo dal Fr , and drummer Leo Mitchel rounds out a tight, well-groomed collective. Baker is in fine form, but he skips the vocals. Bruno Martino's "Estate" is hauntingly rendered, while J.J. Johnson's "Lament" is given an attractive reading. This amounts to a very accessible, enjoyable set of tunes — one that may not win any awards, but should reward those who appreciate the delicate and lovely nature of Chet Baker's art.

This superbly recorded bootleg features Chet Baker in good form in his July 1980 appearance at the Estival, in a quintet of European jazz musicians. The highlight of the album is an excellent 16-minute rendition of 'Night Bird'.

But when Chet plays... Rarely have you heard him play with such fire and intensity. He blows loud, high and fast. This one is a bit unusual since the trumpeter is accompanied by David Friedman (on vibes and marimba), bassist Buster Williams and drummer Joe Chambers. The music (which includes two takes of "Syzgies/3+1=5" on the re- issue Enja ENJ 1021) is somewhat challenging ("The Song Is You" is the only standard) and it inspires Baker to come up with some lyrical statements. There are many Chet Baker recordings from his final decade and his true fans will want to pick up this one. - AMG
