With the death of Fabrizio De André from cancer on January 11, 1999, Italy lost one of its most modern singer/songwriters. Inspired by the songwriting of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, De André's songs encompassed Genoese folk songs, French protest/social commentary, beatnik "stream of consciousness" poetry, and the soundtracks of Italian film Westerns. A native of the Genoese province of Liguria, De André was born into a wealthy family. His father's criticism of the fascists who controlled Italy caused he and his family to go into hiding in Asti during World War II. The experience left a lasting mark. Although he returned to Genoa following the end of the war in 1945, he continued to be drawn to political and social issues. Entering university as a pre-law student, De André found music a more effective mode for expressing his views. Having studied violin as a youngster, he found his natural musical voice after acquiring his first guitar at the age of 16. American jazz guitarist Jim Hall served as an early influence. Launching his professional career as a member of pianist Mario DeSantis' jazz band, De André increasingly veered toward more pop-minded genres. Forming a country western band, Crazy Cowboy Sheriff Ore, he began writing his own songs about suicide, prostitution, and drugs. His debut single, " Nuvole Barocche," was released in 1958. Scoring his first hit, "Marinella," in 1965, De André released his first album of new material, Tutto Fabrizio De Andre, the following year. He remained seclusive, however, refusing to appear on television and not performing his first concert until March 18, 1975. He continued to maintain a low profile for the rest of his life, rarely appearing in concert. De André attracted international attention when he was kidnapped, along with his compatriot Dori Ghezzi, in August 1979 and imprisoned for four months by Sardinian criminals.

Extremely important in defining what makes a Neapolitan song is the matter of language. All such songs are written and performed in Neapolitan dialect. They are never translated into standard Italian (although there are versions of many of the songs in other languages). Anyone in Italy—Neapolitan or not—who sings these songs has to sing them in Neapolitan. The matter of dialect has not prevented a few non-Neapolitans from writing dialect lyrics for the Neapolitan song.

Biography of Roberto Murolo (1912-2003)
The son of Lia Cavalli and Ernesto Murolo, poet and author of many classic Neapolitan songs, ("Napule 'ca se ne va" (Naples leaving home), "Piscatore 'e Pusilleco", "Nun me scetà") Roberto took up the guitar as a boy. Before he was twenty-five, he joined the vocal group Mida Quartet (inspired by the American group The Mills Brothers) with whom he toured Europe between 1939 and '46, performing a repertoire of both international and Italian songs.
At the end of the war, he returned to his native Italy, where he took up performing at the Tragara Club in Capri. His stripped down, whispered 'chansonnier' style, based around a sultry vocal accompanied only by guitar, represented a significant modernising of the local song tradition, which was sure to make converts (amongst whom, a name familiar to everyone, Fausto Cigliano). The response was immediate. His first 78's, helped by much airplay, met with great success, and triggered a successful movie career for Roberto, who, by way of example, also appeared in Raffaello Matarazzo's films "Catene" and "Tormento".
His interest in the Neapolitan repertoire lead him to do extensive research on the subject, culminating in the issue, between 1963 and '65, of 12 LP's of "Napoletana:- A chronological anthology of Neapolitan songs", followed at the beginning of 1969 by a series of recorded monographs on the work of poets of the stature of Salvatore di Giacomo, Ernesto Murolo, Libero Bovio, E.A. Mario and Raffaele Viviano. Murolo's vast repertoire now included masterpieces such as "Munasterio 'e Santa Chiara" (Santa Chiara Monastery), "Vierno"(Winter), "Luna Caprese"(Capri Moon), "Scalinatella"(Steps), "Tammuriata nera"(Black Tammuriata), "'Na voce, 'na chitarra e 'o ppoco 'e luna"(A voice, a guitar and a little moonlight), but as a consummate composer, he also performed his own songs, from "'O ciucciarello"(O little donkey)(1951) to "Torna a vucà" (1958), from "Sarrà... chi sa" (It will be... who knows)(1959) to "Scriveme"(Write me) (1966).
Following legal setbacks, his output suffered a certain cutback, and it wasn't until 1990 that he finally returned to the recording studio with the album "'Na voce, 'na chitarra" where he performes songs by other singers :- for example Paolo Conte's "Spassiunatamente", and Lucio Dalla's "Caruso". It was the start of a second flowering of youth for Murolo, which saw him duet with Mia Martini ("Cu'mme") on "Ottanta voglia di cantare" and on "Don Raffae" with Fabrizio de André, while on "Tu si' 'na cosa grande" (You're something great) (1994), a tribute to Domenico Modugno, it is Amalia Rodrigues who accompanies him on 'Anema e core' (Heart and Soul). He continued his intense concert schedule until 1997, when he recorded his farewell work "Ho sognato di cantare" (2002), eleven love songs recorded with songwriters and musicians from his home town of Naples.

Mina Anna Mazzini (born in Busto Arsizio on 25 March 1940 as Anna Maria Mazzini),professionally known as Mina, is an Italian pop singer. Admired for her voice and performing talent, she was a star attraction of Italian television variety shows from early 60s to late 70s. During the years, Mina was a dominant figure of Italian charts and reached an unsurpassed level of popularity in Italy. She has recorded over 1000 songs, 110 albums, sold 76 million records,[3] and scored 70 singles in Italian charts. Mina is the only artist to land an album at the 1st place of the Italian chart in each of the five decades starting from the 1960s. She gave up public appearances in 1978, but has continued to release albums on a yearly basis to date.

Mina's first TV appearances in 1959 presented the first Italian female rocker. Her way of singing and visualizing the beat with her body earned her the nicknames "Tiger of Cremona" and "Queen of Screamers". Mina introduced her new sensual maner with the song "Il cielo in una stanza", which was turned to a Billboard Hot 100 hit. Her voice had a distinctive timbre and great power. The main theme of Mina's songs was dramatic interpretation of distressing love stories.[8] The singer combined the classic Italian melody with soul music, particularly with the songs "Se stasera sono qui", "Deborah"(1968), and her cooperation with Lucio Battisti in 1969 and 1970. She blended modern styles with Italian music, particularly bossa nova with "Sacumdì sacumdà" (1968), and nuevo tango in her cooperation with Ástor Piazzolla in 1972. Composers working for RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana) wrote songs with large vocal range and transitions of tonality to demonstrate her singing skills, particularly Bruno Canfora's "Brava" (1965) and Ennio Morricone's pseudo-serial "Se telefonando" (1966)

Francesco De Gregori - Per Brevità Chiamato Artista (2008)

Born in 1951 in Rome, singer/songwriter Francesco De Gregori grew up listening to and being inspired by American musicians Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen as well as Italian artist Fabrizio De André. It was the latter who heard De Gregori recording songs at a famous studio in Rome, and was impressed enough to began helping the young singer. In 1972, after De Gregori signed to IT, Theorius Campus, an LP with Antonello Venditti, was released. Unfortunately, critics were unimpressed with the album, a sentiment that continued through De Gregori's 1973 solo debut, Alice Non Lo Sa, and its 1974 self-titled follow-up. Success finally came with the next year's Rimmel, which showed off the musician's maturing, reflective, and intelligent lyrics over musical help from Lucio Dalla, among others.

11. Coraggio 04:18
12. Bruto 04:25
13. Mi Disordino 12:14
14. [Untitled Hidden Track]

This 2005 release finds Jovanotti in good form after the slightly disappointing Il Quinto Mondo. Buon Sangue's great moments recall the laid-back, sunny approach of Capo Horn, as in "Voglia di Libertà" and "La Valigia," or in the hidden bonus track that gives the record its title, a throwback to Jovanotti's trademark melodic hip-hop. As usual with Jovanotti's records, however, the best three tracks are placed right at the beginning of the album, the funky opening "Tanto" and the hypnotic, sensitive love songs "Per Me" and "Mi Fido di Te" -- the latter being the one absolute classic that all Jovanotti albums seem to feature. After this powerful opening salvo, the album enters a slump of funk raves that render seven out of the ten remaining tracks all but virtually undistinguishable. Buon Sangue is indeed the most funk-oriented album of Jovanotti's career, boasting tight arrangements and performances from a great groove band -- but the songs that really stand out are the ones that deviate from the pattern. Another number one record in Italy for Jovanotti, Buon Sangue is a good, solid effort, if not particularly memorable. ~ Mariano Prunes, All Music Guide
